290 jobs in store in Brighton and Eastbourne

Hundreds of jobs are to be created with the opening of two new stores.

California cool is set to bring 250 jobs with the arrival of fashion giant Hollister in Brighton, while 40 posts are being made available as a new branch of Family Bargains opens in Eastbourne. Hollister’s flagship store, which is part of the Abercrombie & Fitch brand and devoted to southern Californian lifestyle, will open in Churchill Square Shopping Centre in early December. The posts will range from shop assistants to managers.

A spokesman for Hollister said: “Hollister is all about hot surfers and beautiful beaches.

“The laidback lifestyle and All-American image gives Hollister an energy that s effortlessly cool. Hollister brings southern California to the world. Churchill Square centre director Sam Eastwood said: We are pleased to be welcoming Hollister to Churchill Square, adding to the centre s already strong fashion and lifestyle retailer offering. Hollister is a key fashion brand aimed at the aspirational youth market and its arrival in Brighton is symptomatic of the city s economic strength, as well as its fashion credentials.”

The opening of the Family Bargains store on Tuesday in Kingfisher Drive, Langney, Eastbourne, is the first East Sussex branch of the UK value retailer. It stocks items from 49p to £ 49.99 including big name brands such as Hoover, L’Oreal and Morphy Richards.

Hussein Lalani, the store’s co-founder and commercial director said: “We have recently launched the Family Bargain brand following the success of our main 99p stores. We found a good site in Eastbourne which offers easy transport access and good parking. We are working with the local Job Centre to fill the vacancies, which range from customer assistants to stock controllers and shelf stackers.

A spokesman for Sussex Enterprise, the county’s chamber of commerce, said councils needed to be careful about which chains they allowed to open stores in case they damaged the look of the area. He said: "All new jobs are welcome but how long will this store be there? If it goes too downmarket too fast it will devalue the other retailers and they will look elsewhere.”

Let us hope there are still some immigrants about who are capable of doing these jobs since our home grown layabouts won't be able to.

Part of the premises it is taking over was Blue Inc, which has relocated to the former Dixon's at the front of Churchill Square.
