A mix-up over a name had people thinking that Aussie crooner turned reality TV star Peter Andre would be turning on Chippenham’s Christmas lights.

But his many fans will be disappointed to know that rather than Pete, it could be football referee Andre Marriner flicking the switch.

Chippenham Town Council and the tourist office says no-one has yet officially been signed up for the job.

Tourist Information Office assistant manager David Dorey dismissed the idea it would be either Peter Andre or Andre Marriner.

He said: “I know we’ve started talking with someone about the switch-on but I don’t know much more than that. It’s not Peter Andre, it’s not Pete Doherty and it’s not Robbie Williams unfortunately.

“It seems a bit of a shame really, but I’m sure the person who does turn the lights on will do a brilliant job.

“It would be a bit of an interesting one if Peter Andre did decide to turn the lights on, but I would have remembered. I would love something like that though.” On the issue of Mr Marriner he said: “We’re certainly not having a man by that name turn on the lights that I’m aware of.”

Christmas lights are already being put up around the town, and will be switched on on November 19, with festivities starting at 6.15pm. There will be fireworks, food stalls, street entertainment and a fun fair, and Santa will abseil in.

Previous visitors to the town include Hollyoaks star Kris Deedigan, who plays teacher Des Townsend.
