Jailed Littlehampton animal rights activist boasts of "easy" life in prison

An animal rights campaigner jailed for terrorising people linked to a laboratory has boasted how she has been given “vegan treats” in jail.

Sarah Whitehead has told how she has been provided with special toiletries that have not been tested on animals and given treats from the prison canteen.

Last week Whitehead, who was known by other members of the animal rights group Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (Shac) as Mumsy, was sentenced for leading hate-filled attacks against companies with connections to the Huntingdon Life Sciences animal testing laboratory in Cambridgeshire.

Whitehead, 53, of Thorncroft Road, Littlehampton, who was described by police as a "corrupting influence" on younger members of the group, has already written a letter to her supporters from her cell at HMP Bronzefield in Middlesex.

Whitehead and five younger members of Shac waged a wide-ranging international conspiracy of intimidation against companies that supplied the lab.

The victims were subjected to realistic bomb hoaxes, criminal damage, threats of violence and abusive telephone calls.

Of course it's not entirely impossible that she is... lying.

So who says she is boasting? I cant see any boastful statements in there.

She is implying she is getting special treatment in prison hence 'boasting'.
I don't see why the use of the term 'boasting' is under debate - it's a completely correct usage of the word.

Yes, that certainly explains why you are questioning the correct usage of the word 'boasting'.

Oh wait, no it doesn't.

And I love the fact you are criticising this type of story, despite the fact you appear to read every single story like it within about 25 seconds of it being posted and post multiple times about the story.
Maybe you secretly like these 'pointless' stories more than you pretend?

Porridge can be vegan if its made with water, although I don't recommend it. It turns into this really dull gruel. I'm not began btw...

I don't agree with animal testing but nor do I agree with threatening peoples lives (even if it's not real). Hope her 'vegan products' are smeard in greasy bacon fat first.

Would you dare say you hoped a Jew was given bacon, would you dare say you hoped a muslim was given pork? I doubt it. See, tabloid morons.

Another dire tabloid story from the Argus - understandable I suppose as it takes effort to change the press releases that get republished here as news...

What this report fails to mention is that these vegan treats are in fact supplied by a volunteer run charity - funded entirely by donations - to the prison canteens for distribution to vegan prisoners.

No prison has ever refused this service - although there can be delays if its the first time they have encountered a vegan - as it assists them to FULFIL THEIR LEGAL OBLIGATIONS TOWARDS THE PRISONERS.

The treats are primarily health orientated (we all may like a packet of mixed nuts to munch on but a vegan requires them - or expensive suppliments) although some are for fun. I dont think however that a vegan who gets a packet of 'Whizzos' (like vegan Smarties) a few times a month is really living it up in prison. The non vegan inmates have fully stocked vending machines and a wide range of toiletries they can buy from the prison shop.

I am not a vegan but I am a citizen and as such I support prisoners who for whatever reason require a special diet to get one as we send people to prison to lose their liberty - not to damage their health. And for the non essentials again I accept this is prison but if one group get treats so should the next.

I would if said Jew / Muslim was trying to change how I lived by threats of violence and intimidation.

Racism and religious intolerance in one ignorant sentence.

The British people got rid of cruel and unusual punishments long ago by the way and we have a long, proud tradition of agitating against any government or monarch who would use such low, immoral practises.

Perhaps you should exercise yourself to learn and understand your own culture - how can anyone change what you don't appear to know?

Is this treatment unusual in our prisons? It is why so many find reoffending the best option when they come out.

To withhold toiletries and foodstuffs that people require as part of their beliefs (whether they are based on religion or conscience is of little import) when you allow everyone else to remain healthy and clean is unusual - note the prefix 'un' to the word 'usual' there.

And just why is it 'usual' that we allow prisoners to keep healthy and clean?

Because to do the opposite would be cruel.

Clear enough?

I just can't think of anything vegan that could be called a 'treat'.

what ever next ganja for rastafarians, quat for somalis and yemenis
however i do not agree on senseless animal testing and whether she is living it up or not I could not support in anyway the actions of HLS and its associated businesses, so I guess that being in the nick not being a child killer, druggie or pyscotic raving loonie probally leaves her as one of the more "normal, well balanced" prisoners and probally but misguidedly some what elevated in status amongst the inmates.
look at the prison service web site, it does not make good reading.

Well the main difference (which should really be fairly apparent) is that what is required to remain healthy and clean is not a matter of belief. It is universal regardless of religious or personal belief. All prisoners and humans in general require food, medicine and washing products to remain healthy.
However religious or beliefs from conscience are not required for the same reasons.
Clear enough?

It's only right a vegan should be given vegan food. A person principals should be respected, surely? I remember reading that this lady took/rescued a dog after being told by neighbours that she/he was being beaten on a regular basis and she was also told that the RSPCA had been informed but were doing nothing about it. Her heart led her to steal this animal from his/her unfortunate situation and make sure he had a lving home. Unbelievably, there appeared to be no compassion or understanding for the dogs circumstances in the courts because she received a 2yr sentence. I would imagine most people would have wanted the dog taken to safety but not everyone would have taken the personal risk that she did.

shacwatch says...

Yes - she got 2 years for theft of the puppy and the RSPCA 'did nothing' as they had already inspected and found no issue. This all came out at the time of the trial including pictures of the kids missing their puppy.
Try not to perpetuate SHAC lies - this is how they work - any facts they don't like they forget/
