Detectives investigating the frenzied slaying of a young horse are considering the possibility the killing is linked to a cult.
Officers are refusing to rule out that Rascal, who was found dead in a field off Kings Ride in Alfriston near Polegate last month, was sacrificed as part of a ritual.
Detective Constable Annie Nash, leading the investigation, said she was baffled as to who stabbed and mutilated the 18-month-old animal.
Rascal died over the weekend of Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24.
His body was found by a member of the public. His neck and head had been cut and he had body parts missing.
A spokeswoman for the National Equine Welfare Council, an umbrella group of horse charities and organisations, confirmed there was a possibility Rascal was the innocent victim of a black magic fanatic.
