Surely there aren’t many drummers out there who can deftly unscrew a cymbal with one hand while keeping a drum solo going with the other.

And if there are, few could make it look as easy or as smooth as Sekou Lumumba, whose recent addition to Bedouin Soundclash has certainly added an extra dimension.

Not that the trio were short of depth beforehand – considering they were already bearing the flag for the unlikely genre that is Canadian reggae-ska.

The drum solo, which lasted more than five minutes during the song National Water, and also included a deft reattaching of the cymbal, was typical of a set littered with innovative reworkings of the band’s hits.

They have declared that they want to “look forward” with the new album Light The Horizon but the group drew mostly on crowd-pleasing songs from 2004’s Sounding A Mosaic for this set.

Among them was a smile-inducing rendition of their biggest hit When The Night Feels My Song combined with both Desmond Dekker’s Israelites and Ben E King’s Stand By Me.

The band look more world-weary since the song first reached both charts and mobile phone adverts but it capped an uplifting night for the sell-out crowd.
