Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus is, in a nutshell, a really neat little show.

It achieved the holy grail of children’s theatre by managing to be simultaneously totally engaging for the very young children, some as young as one, while being entertaining in a non-patronizing way for the adults in the audience. Its recipe for success was simplicity itself – Big Wooden Horse have adapted a solid, uncomplicated story by Mo Willems.

Anna Poland’s costume design has remained true to the original illustrations and simply lifted it into three dimensions, while the set design was an inspired version of giant building bricks which, like the originals, have different faces painted on them to represent everything they needed from sets and props to characters.

This was all glued together by two all-round talented actors who delivered bright and snappy dialogue, foot-tapping sing-a- long songs and masses of shout- out-loud audience participation.

At about an hour long it was the perfect length to engage and entertain the little ones without dipping in energy and the children left the theatre absolutely buzzing.

It’s no wonder this show has entertained more than 70,000 children worldwide and no doubt there will be many more to come.
