Saltdean Lido campaign to feature in documentary
4:30pm Wednesday 29th December 2010 in News By Ruth Lumley
A historic lido, which is at risk of closure, will be the focus of a documentary.
The Save Saltdean Lido Campaign has been asked to take part in the programme as it tries to find a way to prevent a development on the site.
Current leaseholder Dennis Audley revealed earlier this year plans to redevelop the lido, build 102 flats and fill in the outdoor pool.
The fight to save the 1930s art deco building began immediately and the campaign has gained support from across the UK as well as from around the world.
Rebecca Crook, chairwoman of the Friends of Saltdean Lido Committee, said they will be seeking to expand their committee in the new year.
The campaign has had proposals for an alternative redevelopment of the building drawn up by architecture and design studios Conran and Partners, which would be sympathetic to the original building, leaving the pool open and allowing the community to use the space.
They have also applied to English Heritage, asking for the building to be upgraded from grade II listed to grade II*, to safeguard it from residential development.
The committee hopes to receive a decision about this early in the new year.
Mrs Crook said: “We are appealing to anybody with old photographs to come forward to help bring it to life.”
