Sussex drivers complain of pothole misery

CRACKS: Potholes are increasingly appearing on roads across Sussex CRACKS: Potholes are increasingly appearing on roads across Sussex

With petrol prices rocketing, drivers are already feeling the pinch.

But they are also facing another recurring nightmare.

The Argus has been contacted by a number of readers about huge cracks in the road.

Eight month pregnant Danielle Farrant was hit by loose stone chippings from a pothole near her home in Western Road, Newhaven.

Fortunately, because it was raining, she was wearing a hood and avoided any serious injury.

When she contacted the council she claims staff told her she would have to wait ten days for it to be repaired.

After telling the council she would report the pothole to The Argus, it was quickly repaired.

An East Sussex County Council spokesman said: "Our road inspectors looked at Western Road and noted the pothole and after being added to our schedule of work, the pothole was filled.

“We do rely on reports from members of the public to pick up problems that have developed between inspections and thank Mrs Farrant for letting us know about this road fault.”

In the last few days, our readers have reported potholes in Burgess Hill, Shoreham and Woodingdean.

Having just had my third windscreen broken by loose stones I complained to ESCC. Their excuse is that there is no money for either repairs or a much needed pro-active road maintenance programme as there used to be. The only thing they can do is to "resort to our Reactive Maintenance gangs to fill pot holes on an ad-hoc basis in an attempt to keep the roads safe". Now just have a look at any council website and see the absolute garbage that they spend millions on while sacrificing front line services. They have their fingers in far too many pies that are not the concern of organisations whose main function is to keep the infrastructure and front line services running!

West Susex councils
wants members of the public to report potholes. Good idea is it a free phone line and what is it? Members of the public doing council work again for free. Don't councils have dustcarts going round every street in the county on a weekly basis why are these personal not told to report or is it against there job description? iF you take notice all the potholes appear to be the ones they repaired last year.

Of course they're the same holes. A shovelful of tarmac only lasts as long as the next frost. All those years of patching and bodging are fast catching up with councils. And they have no answer, and no money because they've spent it all on non-jobbers, ludicrous efforts to appear pc, and 'elf & safety rubbish. Interesting to see what they come up with when public outrage really takes off!

so the fat cat bosses want us to do there job, well i have this weekend i reported 7,i suppose i won`t get their wage though.,i am sick of potholes, they are the bain of my little cars life.
last year i reported lots of various potholes in december09/jan10 that i am forced to drive over just to get to work,as a result my car suffered a lot of damage, due to potholes, not my words but my mechanic,so i took pictures of offending potholes and receipts of work done and reasons why,my car suffered damaged and spoke to lots of over paid bods for months,6months later after bods assured me i`d get help, they refused flatly,i was fuming,it makes me feel like not buying car tax as car tax fund used to be spent on our roads.
Roads in heathfield and surrounding villages, like buxted, framfield and uckfield ,these roads are a nightmare unless you have a 4x4,but i am sure they get damage done to,what i need is a little ole tiger tank, thats robust enough and would last me years without worrying about suspension.....
