Closure of Worthing Somerfield will cost jobs

Jobs will be lost when a supermarket chain closes a store.

The Co-operative Group is to close its Somerfield store in the Guildbourne Centre, Worthing.

A spokesman for the group said staff could be laid off.

She said: “Every effort will be made to redeploy as many as possible of the 15 full-time and five part-time staff with the Cooperative, or to help them find alternative employment.”

She said the store’s poor trading had left the group with no other option than to close the store.

Worthing town centre manager Sharon Clarke said the closure was expected.

She said: “The news doesn’t come as a surprise. The loss of a site is disappointing but hopefully the commercial agents will attract someone else to take it over.”

Will we be hearing from the rabid anti-supermarket brigade, beaming from ear-to-ear about the closure and these job losses?

The loss of any jobs at this time is terrible. More families in trouble and more people on the dole and fewer people contributing tax and NI to help reduce the mega deficit.

The writing was on the wall when They opened Morrisons and the Coop went to small convenience stores

Chalk up another scalp for Toscos...no coincidence of course that when their nearby 'express' store opened, sales went down in somerfield...now watch the prices there rise as they've picked off the 'convenience' competition yet again...Goring, you have been warned!

Another victim of the exhorbitant rents being charged by the Guildbourne Centre. The council express concern at the loss of a major retailer in the centre, yet they do nothing to try and keep tenants. The demise of the whole place will be a self fulfilling prophecy, unless proactive steps are taken (NOW) to encourage new retailers into the centre. Yet, another example of inaction, by Worthing BC.
