A Sussex Police Authority member wants to hear from people who experienced policing of protests in Brighton last year.

Sussex Police has received nine complaints about demonstrations against tuition fees on November 30 and against claims of tax avoidance by businesses on December 4.

The force said seven of the complaints were from people who were not involved in the demonstrations but were challenging the “tactical options” used.

The other two came from people involved in the protests. Those complaints did not involve anyone being injured or arrested.

The force said the complaints are still being investigated.

The professional standards committee of Sussex Police Authority - which oversees the running of the force - is due to meet tomorrow.

Green councillor Ben Duncan, who represents Brighton and Hove City Council on the authority, said he is keen to hear from anybody who experienced police operations around protests.

He said: “We will be discussing issues around complaints arising from recent protests.

“If anyone has experience of the way police have handled the events in the city, I can put any information I get into the debate.”
