Hove rock star found dead

First published in News

Thin Lizzy guitarist and Hove resident Gary Moore has died at the age of 58.

The Valance Gardens resident was found dead in his hotel room while on holiday in the Costa del Sol.

He was a regular at the Neptune Inn, on Kingsway, and played a charity concert at the Old Market Hall in April last year.

Originally from Belfast Mr Moore was renowned as a blues rock guitarist and was twice a member of Thin Lizzy, as well as releasing a number of solo albums.

Thin Lizzy founding member Brian Downey said: "I am in total shock. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers and I just can't believe he is gone."

Very sad news. Seen him perform a few times, and seen him 'out and about' in Brighton once or twice too.

He was a genuine guitar legend.

Haiti Fundraiser last April in the OM. YouTube is awash with comments behind tracks from all over the world. A measure of the stature of this man quietly living in Hove until now.

YouTube videos from 2006 are lovely - with BBKing. And looking at him in th OM video just four years on, you can see he aged. Not one of God's stronger creations, physically. All this strength sapped by genius, maybe.

An amiable man. Modest. Which is generally the way with musicians.

The Neptune is currently closed, said to be re opening this month.

A great guitarist who will be sadly missed. Unfortunately he was not in Vallance Gardens when we were round the corner in Hove St.

PS Greegall are you another Albion fan in Scotland?

I was once sent an anonymous letter asking me for a date & the writer had written: I might be the most ugly bloke since Gary Moore but you won't know unless you meet me.."
I never thought Gary Moore *was* that ugly actually, but I never did find out as I didn't meet him in the end.
I've got a fair amount of Gary's stuff on my iPod & it's such a shame he's gone, & so young too. I'll probably have a listen to Parisian Walkways & that always moves me.
