Squatters who have occupied a possible new Sainsbury’s site are facing eviction.

The owners of the former Taj store on St James’ Street, Brighton, have confirmed they will take legal action against protesters, who want to use the building as a community centre.

It is currently in the hands of administrators, BDO, who have been in talks with the supermarket about the possibility of opening a Sainsbury’s Local at the site.

But according to one member of Sabo-Taj, the group who have been squatting in the building since Sunday, they will not easily be moved.

The man, who would only be identified as Joe, said: “We are here and we are working hard to make this a great space for the community. We haven’t heard from the owners but if they want to talk to us they know where we are.”

Suggested uses for the building have included a space for community workshops, a place to provide provisions for homeless people and a community library.

Police returned to the property yesterday morning but no one was moved on.

A police spokeswoman said: “We have been in contact with the owners, who have confirmed they will take legal action to remove the squatters. It is up to them to take the necessary steps.” The protesters have urged people to sign a petition against Sainsbury’s plans for the building.
