Work on Brighton's Palace Pier will begin this summer

Work to replace part of the deck of Brighton's Palace Pier will begin this summer.

The boat deck structure, which was built in the 1930s and supports Horatio’s Bar, will be replaced after a survey found parts had rusted and become worn.

Work on the project is due to start on May 3 subject to listed building consent and is expected to take up to nine months.

A total of 36 piles underneath the structure will be replaced by 24 steel piles surrounded by precast reinforced jackets. A new deck structure will be built.

Pier bosses said the attraction would remain open throughout but the area of work will be cordoned off by painted boards.

Nick Clarke, who is responsible for maritime projects at Gifford, which designed the replacement programme, said: “The key challenge for this project is to minimise the potential disruption to the business of the pier.”

I love it when the Argus calls the pier by its correct name: Palace Pier :)

How about Noble reinstating the Theatre that they promised to do when they took over .. so may years ago....

Typial - starting the work just when the visitor season is beginning. They must have been taking lessons from the council who start major road works in the summer.

Love the security words - tear-hole

Excellent point! And to me, it will ALWAYS be the Palace Pier, NOT Brighton Pier!

The National Piers Society REFUSE to allow a name change from Palace Pier to Brighton Pier.... end of.

It IS and always will be - PALACE PIER - regardless of what the owners want to erect as signs.

Who cares what it's called? It's an overrated, over-priced piece of stinking architecture that will hopefully, when the next storm arrives, be banished into the turd-infested waters, much like your other one. Clowns.

Nice when your own link dis-proves your stupid statement.
They only opposed the name change BUT as the Nobles own it they can call it what they want.
Any work would have to be done in good weather and calm seas so a nine month plan is bound to run over some summer months whenever it is done.
Think about the taxes and wages they are giving to our town before slagging off people who actually have a stake in Brighton as a tourist attraction, or you could always carry on being so supportive of our fine city

Hove Actually talks of a "stupid statement" carries on to mention "...taxes & wages they are giving to our TOWN...." then "....have a stake in BRIGHTON..." before rounding off with "...being so supportive of our fine CITY"
Mmm! Glasshouses/stones?

Sorry HoveAlone but the pier is actually in Brighton not Hove. Seeing as you want a referendum to free the 'peoples republic of Hove', from the tyranny that is being associated with Brighton, I would suggest that the amount of tax, employment etc is not your concern.
I notice it's 'our town' when the argument suits.

Spot on, true Brightonains will never forget (or forgive) that. Although I do have an element of sympathy for the charming 'Cooley' above, it IS over-priced and as a local I never go there.

Have to say I did a double-take but then realised this poster is Hove Actually, Brighton not the ubiquitous Hove Alone.
