Brighton's Komedia to turn theatre into cinema

A premier arts venue is to ditch the small stage for the big screen due to the economic climate.

Komedia, in Gardner Street, Brighton, has applied to turn one of its auditoriums into a three screen cinema.

The revelation, which some staff at the venue did not know about, was only confirmed in planning papers presented to Brighton and Hove City Council.

The upstairs auditorium currently has a capacity of 560 and hosts a variety of music events, shows and cabaret.

The planning application proposes to create three cinema screens with capacities of 125, 53 and 71 and an adjoining bar.

Brighton and Hove City Council is currently consulting neighbours and expects to make a decision by April 19.

If it could be the art-house cinema that the Dukes never quite manages to be, I'd be in favour.

Great idea. As much as I'd like to see the Duke of York do better, it's in a horrid area of town. Komedia would be a fantastic venue for this - central and in a far more pleasant area. I'll be interested to see what shows there.

This is actually a really good idea, we could do with a small cinema in the North Laine. There are only two cinemas in the city centre and this will be a great addition.
