Bar firm pulls out of Pride 2011

Pride's bar contractor has pulled out of a deal to sell drinks at the event this summer.

Stagfleet Ltd, which owns Club Revenge, has decided not to continue with its four-year contract just a year after signing it.

The decision leaves Pride bosses needing to find a new business to take on the £70,000 contract to run the bars at the Preston Park event on August 13.

Last year Wild Fruit dropped out of Pride in July and Stagfleet stepped in at the last minute to take over the bars.

It is unclear why the company has made the u-turn.

Slack journalism here, Argus.
The interesting detail here that's entirely missing is not that Stagfleet have pulled out - but WHY they have pulled out.
And if they signed a contract for 4 years to supply the bar, why is it not being enforced? Contracts work both ways.
Something not right here.

Maybe because most people take their own booze.

Why queue up to pay £3 for a can of lager when you can take in your own?

Maybe to do with New Entrance charge..

Seems there is no decrease in Ground rent for stalls, there will obviously be a revenue drop.

70,000£ contract for what Ground Rent! Is that £70k per year or for the whole length of contract!

Will it soon be "RIP PRIDE.."

The sooner the whole stupid event is completely cancelled and consigned to the history books the better. As a gay man I have spent years trying to convince people that it is 'normal' and isn't a 'lifestyle choice' etc, and all Pride does is completely degrade homosexuality and promote it as nothing more than a promiscous, shallow, clubbing and boozing, sexualised lifestyle choice.

I am deeply ashamed and embarassed of being part of the gay 'community' when I see such damaging events being staged - as a gay man I say get rid of it now otherwise gay people will never ever be accepted as just 'normal people' just like everyone else.

What a ridiculous comment!

MOST pubs / bars / clubs in Brighton charge over £3 a pint!

If Stagfleet weren't charged £17,500 for a couple of bars open for a single day, then maybe they wouldn't have to, of course that didn't factor into your idiotic comment did it? Dummy.

Nobody is forcing you to pay 3.50£ a pint. And nothing stopped you bringing you own beer to pride in the park!!

£17,500 ground rent to an event that now will have less thru put due to prices on gate..

Maybe it is time to put this event out of its misery once & for all?

The reason why Stagfleet have pulled out is that Pride are a ridiculously greedy organisation to deal with and always have been. The deal with Stagfleet would have been cut to the bone in that the profit made by them would have been dubious.

Bear in mind that this is the same company that own (amongst others) Club Revenge which has about the best buying power for alcohol that you can get. If they cant make it work then who can?

I've seen proposals for Pride over the last several years and they are just a nonsense; there is no incentive for a company to commit to providing the bars given the likely margins even assuming it will be attended to capacity.

The positive thing about the financial marketplace at the moment is that there is a natural Flushing-out process of businesses and organisations that do not really deserve to be trading.

Pride is certainly one of them.

I have been distressed in recent years to see that pride in Brighton had become something calling itself "Gay Pride", and catering to the all-too obvious presence of a certain odious minority in our city. Even children were being involved, we noted!
As someone who has always taken pride in being a Brightonian, this "hijacking" has annoyed me - and my wife - enormously. We resolutely stayed away from the uncalled-for posturings, sometimes spending the entire day in Eastbourne with my wife's aunt who runs a delightful B&B there, and refusing to contribute even a penny to the unseemly farce in our home town.
Congratulations on giving Pride back to the majority of the citizens of our fair city and removing the association with such people.
Like London Pride, a song popular in my youth, we can now raise out heads once more in true Brighton Pride.
A neighbour told me he was gratified last year to see a large number of normal couples in St James's Street on the Sunday, disappointingly most of them were in a high state of intoxication. Perhaps the local pubs could be closed on that day!

I think it is relative....I am straight and don't believe the event portrays the gay community as shallow, boozy or promiscuous. I cannot speak for everyone but certainly myself and my friends attend solely for a **** up and to enjoy ourselves. These antics have no influence on our interpretation of the gay community, and vice versa, we would hope.
