The University of Sussex Women's Cricket Club will be holding a special Street20 cricket tournament at the university sports centre on Falmer campus tomorrow, from 2pm to 4pm.

Team captain Lydia Stevens and club president Helen McGuire, both third year history students, have organised the event in order to promote the university itself as well as women's cricket in general.

Lydia said: "Street20 is an exciting new form of cricket that's accessible, energetic and really engaging.

"It's essentially continuous cricket which gets every member of two six-a-side teams involved with both the ball and the bat."

Games comprise of 20 balls per innings, four balls per bowler and no LBW rule.

Due to its youthful nature, plastic bats are sometimes employed in Street20, as well as a tennis ball or specially made indoor cricket ball instead of a traditional harder cricket ball.

Club president Helen said: "We've got four other women's and girls' teams coming from the surrounding area: St Peters, Brighton and Hove, Steyning, and Chichester Priory."

The University of Sussex Women's Cricket Club is one of the most successful and popular sports clubs at the university and often draws a big crowd.

Helen said: "We're hoping the tournament will establish and consolidate links with the wider community and encourage greater participation from both women and girls in cricket throughout Sussex."

Eminent cricketer Tim Marks, who supervises the Street20 cricket initiative in Brighton, will be umpiring the games and awarding the medals at the end.

Lydia said: "After the tournament we've organised a social event to be held in Falmer Bar with a buffet, aimed at helping friendly relations with the local teams. It should be a brilliant day."
