A bus taking children to school was discovered to have faulty brakes.

The defective brakes were uncovered during an operation carried out by East Sussex Road Policing Unit officers inspecting school transport.

Operation Coachman sawseven vehicles carrying pupils stopped by police on the way to schools yesterday. Officers discovered one vehicle had faulty brakes and three buses which were not displaying obligatory signs.

Sussex Police has refused to say which coach firms were involved or where the vehicles were stopped.

The operators of the bus with the faulty brakes were told to repair the brakes but were not prosecuted.

The driver was warned that if the fault was not repaired he would be given three points on his licence and a £ 60 fine.

Inspector Steve Grace, from East Sussex Road Policing Unit, said: "There is no more valuable a load than a bus full of children.

"When a parent entrusts their child into the care of a transport operator they need to feel confident that their child is going to be as safe as they can be."
