A 27-year-old soldier from Peacehaven has been fatally wounded in Afghanistan.

Daniel Steven Prior died yesterday surrounded by his family, including his three-week-old son.

He was flown back to the UK after being injured in a blast while on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand Province on Thursday, where he had been investigating insurgent activity.

Private Prior, from 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, was born in Brighton but grew up in Peacehaven.

His parents Ian and Gillian made a joint statement with Pte Prior's wife, Emily, and newborn son, Logan, saying: "Dan was a lively young man with an amazing sense of humour.

"He was a wonderful son, husband and father. We are all tremendously proud of him and he will be sorely missed by his family and friends."

Pte Prior died at the same age as his uncle, Steve Prior, who was killed by sniper bullets while trying to save a colleague during the Falklands war.

This is a very sad example of how our men and woman are dying for nothing at all and putting our lives at risk of further terrorist attacks. It brings me personal shame that the Labour Government is the root cause of our problems in regards to the wars because I am kind of Pro Labour (not much choice), but the conservatives could have saved this soilder and used his skills for the defense of the UK and not the illegal invasion of soveriegn countries.

Those that claim to support our troops and are for this war accuse those that dont support this war of not supporting the troops. The only problem with that argument is that your view has killed this man and ours would have saved him. My thoughts and condolences are with the family of this brave man.

As a father whos' son has done two tours of Afgan and one of Iraq I find it very insulting to read this comment attached to the above story.
My thoughts are with the family.
Signed A Falklands Vet.

Tragic story. My thoughts are with his wife, new born son, parents, family, friends and his fellow soldiers.
If there is a fund to be set up to raise some money for his young family I would like to donate (I know this may be too early).
As an ex-army wife, it is a shame that people feel this is the forum to raise political concerns. This young man did a job, regardless of who sent him and why he was sent. We should just honor that he went and gave so much.
RIP

Think about who will be looking at this article. Why do you want to aggravate the friends and families of a man whom died while working on behalf of our queen?

I miss the days when same-heads couldn't use computers.

Tragic situation. My thoughts are with his family - including his new baby. Too young to die.

Armyeng1 is absolutely correct.....a life has been taken for no benefit but at a high cost. Its time more people stated the obvious, especially in these tough economic times! The war in Afghanistan is a total waste of human life, resources and effort.Nothing positive has been,or will be, achieved.Except hundreds of deaths, billions of pounds wasted and generations of people going to take revenge on our offspring.

RIP Daniel and my very sincerest condolences to your family. A young man who was a husband and father has been taken before his time. Can we not just reflect on that and leave politics aside for a moment? He gave his life for Queen and country and to gain for others the freedom that we take for granted. Again, my deepest condolences for your loss.

Couldn't you have spelled soldier and sovereign properly?

I am Dan's cousin - thank you for your kind words. He saved hundreds of lives from the Taliban and if it wasn't for people like him then innocent people would have be killed. He has saved communities and restored lives through his bravery. Dan was a hero.
