The writing is on the street for bright sparks who have come up with an innovative way to cut their electricity use.
Residents in Tidy Street, Brighton, wanted to know how much electricity they used on a daily basis so agreed to take part in a project monitoring their consumption.
But instead of merely marking down the amount of electricity they used in a notebook they opted to do something bolder and recruited Brighton graffiti artist Snub to help.
Every day he has spray-painted a line on the street marking the residents’ average consumption.
Brighton and Hove residents’ average electricity use is also marked, so people living in Tidy Street can see how they fare compared to the rest of the city.
The project is due to take place over about three weeks.
Organiser Jon Bird, 42, of Ditchling Road, Brighton, is working on the project with the Open University.
The project is being funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, a government-run body.
Have you changed your habits after getting hold of an electricity meter? Tell us your stories below.

What a great idea and well done to the people of Tidy Street for taking part. I will go and have a look today. This is a great starting point for a community to tackle energy use. Of course, the usual doom mongers and knockers will not agree.

In the last year I have installed better insulation, an active energy meter, standby overrides, more low energy devices, am halfway through a solar panel installation, have planted fruit trees and created vegetable patches in my garden, got some chickens, am having grey water recycling systems installed, bought a more efficient car, booked a local UK holiday, and spent time educating my kids on the importance of the environment. Now these won't have a huge impact, I don't think I am anything special, but at least these are more practical steps that actually make a difference... I just don't see how some sort of half-arsed art project is going to help the cause, other than a bit of publicity, which I am happy to contribute to...

If you don't like living in a city that likes to express its uniqueness and creativity a little and want another hum drum city just bumbling through life till you die then move somewhere like Eastbourne and stop trying to p*$$ on everyone else’s parade

Surely it's better to express this point in different ways as for some people this will make more of an impact than a newspaper article of public information ad, people absorb info differently to others. It also made me think about collaborative energy use and that working together is far better than just doing it on your own as it encourages others that otherwise may not be that fussed.
Pentle quote: Seeing this walking to the gym certainly made me question and think about energy use, is this not surely the point? It has worked then, to some degree, but I question the fact you needed to see this gimmick to give a thought about energy use. Were you not aware that the worlds resources are quickly running out and the UK will soon experience energy shortages, not to mention the cost of household fuel? One would of thought that most people would try to save money on their bills, unless you are filthy rich or just plain stupid.

I would have the utmost respect for someone if they, for instance, bill-boarded every single high-street store that chooses to leave their lights on 24/7 all year round. Household power wastage is dwarfed by the near criminal commercial wastage! Draw your attentions to the real problem!
This might make real news, cause a real stir and be far less self-congratulatory.
The problem with me being a cu-t and you being one, is that I actually am different cu9t!. You just pretend to be.

Having just reported you for being unnecessarily crass and hateful, I'd just like to point out that your behaviour here has just shown you to be a sad, immature and not very intelligent little person.
You are not better than anyone else, if anything, your attitude and behaviour show you to be far, far beneath the more mature, accepting residents of this city.
Your posts read like a young teenager's and your views are the sort of misplaced arrogance most people grow out of by the end of their teens.
Get a grip and a life and learn to develop some tolerance, because you are just making yourself look incredibly silly over a very positive article.

... and what further offends me, apart from the fact that this seems to condone graffiti, is that I have only just realised that the whole daft stunt has actually been funded via a Government agency... sure the local council employees will be over the moon as they open their P45's... Maybe the Government would do better diverting the money to retrain those redundant employees to become smart energy meter installers - tackling unemployment and cutting down energy usage... Or is that too obvious?
