Brighton street measures electricity use on the road

TIDY: Markings on the road in Tidy Street TIDY: Markings on the road in Tidy Street

The writing is on the street for bright sparks who have come up with an innovative way to cut their electricity use.

Residents in Tidy Street, Brighton, wanted to know how much electricity they used on a daily basis so agreed to take part in a project monitoring their consumption.

But instead of merely marking down the amount of electricity they used in a notebook they opted to do something bolder and recruited Brighton graffiti artist Snub to help.

Every day he has spray-painted a line on the street marking the residents’ average consumption.

Brighton and Hove residents’ average electricity use is also marked, so people living in Tidy Street can see how they fare compared to the rest of the city.

The project is due to take place over about three weeks.

Organiser Jon Bird, 42, of Ditchling Road, Brighton, is working on the project with the Open University.

The project is being funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, a government-run body.

Have you changed your habits after getting hold of an electricity meter? Tell us your stories below.

So not so 'Tidy' Street then.... What's wrong with a notice board, or daily email? What next for 'Snub?' Graffiti-ing my daily bank balance on my shed? Spray painting my mobile phone bill on the side of my car?

The world has gone completely, utterly mad...

What a great idea and well done to the people of Tidy Street for taking part. I will go and have a look today. This is a great starting point for a community to tackle energy use. Of course, the usual doom mongers and knockers will not agree.

Agreed, can no one else but a so called graffiti artist hold a spray can and use stencils these days?

I am ashamed at what graffiti has become, thanks to the trendy media and muppets like Banksy.

Thankfully there are still a few true artists out there.

For the record, I am not a doom monger or a knocker. It is vitally important that we tackle energy use in a credible, sensible way; we have become a world built on spin, gimmickry and casual flirting with 'change.' If society and politicians were actually set on making national improvements, then we would just get on with it... What message does this send out? None. Apart from the fact that there are a few trendy beatniks in a town who think that this is going to have an impact on energy use. IT'S NOT!!!!

Typical Brighton stuff this. I am so tired of seeing wacky ageing 30 somethings trying to be 'radical' and 'a bit different' in Brighton. A fine example are the idiots far to old to own a skateboard, let alone ride one! They are what I and my friends term c**ts.

Hmmm, seems my point about knockers is well demonstrated.

This appears to be part of an experiment, details here...http://www.ch

At least these people are doing something productive. You're just sat curled over your laptop whining, which achieves nothing.

Wait. Yes, you're right. Lets get down there and remove it immediately. B*lls to the community, and their concern about energy usage. If anybody needs me i'll be dealing with bigger fish, like saving the world - from my laptop.

And all your comments prove my point: This country is full of wacky tw4ts who think the answer to some of the most serious problems facing our society is with silly little gimmicks like this - stop coming up with daft projects and actually spend some time trying to invent something that will practically reduce energy usage... Muppets. Oh, and I don't own a laptop, prefer to use pc in the library, thus reducing energy usage....

Yes, but the sentiment is correct - all this wackiness and being different doesn't actually get anything solved - I am all for trying to bring the community together, I am definitely all for reducing energy use, and I have to condede that at least this is publicising the cause - but the fact does remain that there are a hell of a lot of people who spend more time inventing daft projects like this that don't actually solve the problem - in fact if you look at the graph he has spray painted, you'll notice that whilst the street is below the Brighton average, there usage is fluctuating up and down so broadly remaining the same, and therefore is not reducing. In the last year I have installed better insulation, an active energy meter, standby overrides, more low energy devices, am halfway through a solar panel installation, have planted fruit trees and created vegetable patches in my garden, got some chickens, am having grey water recycling systems installed, bought a more efficient car, booked a local UK holiday, and spent time educating my kids on the importance of the environment. Now these won't have a huge impact, I don't think I am anything special, but at least these are more practical steps that actually make a difference... I just don't see how some sort of half-arsed art project is going to help the cause, other than a bit of publicity, which I am happy to contribute to...

ilove seeing things like this in Brighton it's what makes this city unique and points to stand out from the rest. Seeing this walking to the gym certainly made me question and think about energy use, is this not surely the point?

If you don't like living in a city that likes to express its uniqueness and creativity a little and want another hum drum city just bumbling through life till you die then move somewhere like Eastbourne and stop trying to p*$$ on everyone else’s parade

It has worked then, to some degree, but I question the fact you needed to see this gimmick to give a thought about energy use.

Were you not aware that the worlds resources are quickly running out and the UK will soon experience energy shortages, not to mention the cost of household fuel? One would of thought that most people would try to save money on their bills, unless you are filthy rich or just plain stupid.

I was indeed aware, but it brought the importance of it to mind and stressed this important point further. Surely it's better to express this point in different ways as for some people this will make more of an impact than a newspaper article of public information ad, people absorb info differently to others. It also made me think about collaborative energy use and that working together is far better than just doing it on your own as it encourages others that otherwise may not be that fussed.

And no I’m not filthy rich or stupid, well not in this aspect of life.

UK AVERAGE not BRIGHTON AVERAGE or is it trying to say that BRIGHTON AND HOVE are the fore runners in ENERGY SAVING.I would rather see more TIME EFFORT AND ENERGY put into more positive ideas than splashing paint all over the road and having to divert traffic while it dries causing more TRAFFIC PROBLEMS.Will we get an up date WEEK or MONTH?

To all the wannabe C**ts out there who think they are trying to solve a problem but are instead have created a bigger one - spray paint contains aerosol and carbon dioxide and takes years to break down. The carbon footprint caused by the manufacturing of aerosols, let alone the equipment to remove this ridiculous publicity stunt (some wannabe Banksy) from the public highway far outweigh the message they are supposedly trying to convey.

Well said Jo! @Dezire - what an ignorant comment. The older people you see in the town that are probably twice your age, skateboarding, alternately dressed, not conforming and doing their own thing were here in Brighton doing it all while you were still in your nappies. your generation does nothing new, it just takes from the past. you think your different and better than us? Ain't my fault for inaccurate reporting. You c:::ts have becoming confused with doing something different and making a real change with a publicity stunt that achieves nothing but a column in the local rag and a notch on the bed post for the aspiring artist.
I would have the utmost respect for someone if they, for instance, bill-boarded every single high-street store that chooses to leave their lights on 24/7 all year round. Household power wastage is dwarfed by the near criminal commercial wastage! Draw your attentions to the real problem!
This might make real news, cause a real stir and be far less self-congratulatory.

I read and responded to your original post, and have now scrolled down to see this.

Having just reported you for being unnecessarily crass and hateful, I'd just like to point out that your behaviour here has just shown you to be a sad, immature and not very intelligent little person.

You are not better than anyone else, if anything, your attitude and behaviour show you to be far, far beneath the more mature, accepting residents of this city.

Your posts read like a young teenager's and your views are the sort of misplaced arrogance most people grow out of by the end of their teens.

Get a grip and a life and learn to develop some tolerance, because you are just making yourself look incredibly silly over a very positive article.

Maybe the Government would do better diverting the money to retrain those redundant employees to become smart energy meter installers - tackling unemployment and cutting down energy usage... Therefore children can, from a very early age, find energy-saving both informative and fun and, thus, instil in them an awareness of their environment.
