Rumours are rife that Prince William will choose to become the Duke of Sussex after he gets married later this month.
The dukedom has remained up for grabs since 1843 after Prince Augustus, sixth son of King George III, died without a legitimate heir.
The Prince was made Duke of Sussex in 1801 but his marriage to Lady Augusta Murray was declared void by his father meaning the couple’s children could not carry the title on and it became extinct.
It is one of several Dukedoms, including the Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Clarence, that may be offered to Prince William by the Queen.
It is the highest rank in British Peerage. The Queen is also the Duke of Lancaster, while the Prince of Wales is the Duke of Cornwall.
