Work will finally begin this year on a £100 million scheme to make an accident blackspot safe.
The Highways Agency has revealed work on the stretch of the A23 between Handcross and Warninglid will start in the autumn and is expected to last two years.
The road will be widened into three-lane carriageways for 2.4 miles, improving junctions and access routes and installing a footpath and cycleway.
The plans, which were first revealed three years ago, are expected to cost between £87 million and £103 million.
The Highways Agency says work will start between October and December.
