A conservation group has registered its opposition to a giant seafront attraction.

Plans to construct the 45-metre high Brighton Wheel at a site near Palace Pier were submitted last month.

But the Regency Society, the oldest amenity and conservation society in Brighton and Hove, is opposing the plans stating it would be detrimental to the surrounding residential area.

The statement reads: “The area of Brighton east of the Palace Pier is predominantly residential. Its beach is relatively quiet, and a tourist attraction on this scale in this location is inappropriate.

“The amenity of the residential buildings on Marine Parade which face the wheel will be seriously affected by continuous overlooking.”

The statement, signed by Delia Forester on behalf of the group, adds it will have an “overbearing presence” on the nearby conservation area and jeopardise the already approved i360, which is planned for near the West Pier.

But planning consultant Ian Coomber, who is working with applicants Paramount Attractions, said: “Once the wheel is constructed it can arrive at a totally vacant site and be removed within two weeks.

“It’s a highly transportable attraction. That allows it to fit in very easily with the council’s planning constraints.”

According to the application, it would operate all year round between 10am and midnight.

A decision is expected to take place at a meeting of the Brighton and Hove City Council’s planning committee in the coming weeks.
