Jesus Christ was crucified on Brighton’s seafront yesterday.

The shocking scene was the culmination of The Passion of Christ in Brighton – an open-air recreation of the death of the son of God.

A cast of 120 volunteers played out the story to the backdrop of the city’s iconic West Pier.

More than a 1,000 people watched the free three-hour show, which saw Judas Iscariot booed like a pantomime villain as he ran through the crowd after betraying Jesus, and the Messiah paraded through the audience with the cross on his back.

In the run up to the show, the first Passion Play ever to be staged in Brighton, opponents called it “tasteless and bloodthirsty” but the performance itself produced no protest or outcry – the only reaction being polite applause as Jesus was lowered from the cross.

The show is the brainchild of the Brighton Evangelical Alliance who joined forces with James Burke-Dunsmore, who has been playing the role for 12 years and was crucified five times this weekend.

It is hoped the show will return next year but all depends on finding the approximately £60,000 to put on the production.
