Sussex jobs will go when government office moves north

Scores of Sussex jobs will be lost when a government office is relocated.

Up to 80 jobs will go at the Ministry of Justice's civil business centre based at Haywards Heath County Court moves to Salford.

The revelation is a double blow for the town, which is braced for the closure of its county and magistrates courts.

It is believed staff at the courts had expected to be redeployed to the business centre, an option that has now disappeared.

No date has been set for the move to Salford, although unions believe it could be by the end of the year.

The decision, which will save the ministry £130,000 a year, has been condemned by the Public and Commercial Services Union.

80 jobs go to save £130k per annum. Who made up these accounts? The benefit bill will certainly outstrip the savings, so this is another false economy.

"Calm down, dear, calm down!" or as Thatcher put it: "Let's go home and celebrate it", the royal wedding party is over and we all deserve a peaceful hang-over. Unfortunately, this is not it. To be continued...

Salford is not a jolly nice place at all. It has a lot of crime and problems and a lot of poverty. It's slap bang next door to Manchester but does not have Manchester budgets. Yes it has Salford Quays and the Media City but the Salford of old is very much a broken place.
