Scores of Sussex jobs will be lost when a government office is relocated.
Up to 80 jobs will go at the Ministry of Justice's civil business centre based at Haywards Heath County Court moves to Salford.
The revelation is a double blow for the town, which is braced for the closure of its county and magistrates courts.
It is believed staff at the courts had expected to be redeployed to the business centre, an option that has now disappeared.
No date has been set for the move to Salford, although unions believe it could be by the end of the year.
The decision, which will save the ministry £130,000 a year, has been condemned by the Public and Commercial Services Union.
