Updated: Eight arrested at Brighton May Day protests

An alliance of protest groups took to the streets of Brighton and Hove today for an early May Day protest.
Groups protesting at the May Day “street party and protest” event included Smash EDO, South Coast Climate Camp, Brighton Uncut, Brighton Anarchist Black Cross, Sussex Industrial Workers of the World, No Borders Brighton, Squatters' Network of Brighton, Brighton AntiFascists, Brighton Hunt Saboteurs, students, Queer Mutiny Brighton and Brighton Benefits Campaign.
Previous demonstrations by the same groups had seen big-name shops, banks and restaurants become targets for vandalism or invasion.
The protest began on the seafront near the West Pier at midday.
Over the day police estimate about 200 people took part, and a similar number of police.
Organisers rolled a dice marked with locations in the town to decide where to target first.
The demonstration started as a march, which was "kettled" in Duke Street for some time, before splitting up into several smaller groups.
Parts of the city centre were filled with police vans and lines of officers over the afternoon as protesters ranged through the streets.
The event appeared to have finished by about 4pm, but a group of demonstrators later gathered outside Topshop and Vodafone in Western Road.
They too were "kettled" before being searched by police and escorted to Churchill Square.
Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett said: "We are happy to facilitate peaceful protest and welcome people coming to the city to express their views.
"Despite public appeals by ourselves and other people to the organisers to consider the consequences of their actions on the local community and businesses, they failed to co-operate and have been intent on causing disruption.
"They refused to follow a procession and broke off into several smaller groups making it difficult for police to provide a safe and secure environment for protesters and the public.
"This was the second protest over the two bank holiday weekends and the actions of the protesters could have impacted on shops and businesses during a difficult financial time.
"We have to balance the rights of the protesters and the rights of others who want to go about their everyday business."
A statement from Sussex Police said eight people were arrested.
They were: a 25-year-old man, who refused to provide his address, on suspicion of violent disorder following the TUC march in London last month; a 23-year-old man from Chiselhurst, Kent, on suspicion of using threatening and abusive language; a 22-year-old woman from Macclesfield, Cheshire and a 28-year-old man from Brighton, both on suspicion of failing to remove face masks; a 30-year-old man, who refused to provide his address, on suspicion of assaulting and obstructing police; a 25-year-old man, who refused to give his address, on suspicion of assault, obstructing and resisting a police officer; an 18-year-old man, who refused to give his address, on suspicion of common assault and using abusive language; a 28-year-old man from Brighton on suspicion of failing to surrender alcohol.

SO i do hope the usual don't bleet on about Rights to Protest.
Anyway, doesn't the dice with the names of companies that they are going to attack show their intentions.

There will be a lot more civil unrest when people realise that the old, sick and disabled are taking the brunt of the Condem cuts.

I understand what these people stand for and i agree with alot of what they have to say but all i saw today was a crowd of smelly dirty lowlifes wanting to cause trouble and I think the most common comment from passers by was ''whats this all about?" , i dont think they achieved anything other than alienating themselves from the general public

A number of people I met today were astounded that the police did not use truncheons to sort the issues much sooner. Your views are misguided. I think you'll find that the Police not only enforce the law against people but they also help and protect people and their property as required to do so to maintain a Peaceful society or the Queens Peace.
What your talking about is taking the law into your own hands which breaks the law to which we all live under. Police arrested 55 people for the royal wedding, all but 5 arrested without charge. They were arrested because they were suspected of being proetsters. Police have been "kettling" people today - detaining without charge or trial. These are fascistic human rights violations, therefore police state. If you don't see a police state in Britain then your eyes must be sewn shut. There is police terror on the streets, hundreds of thousands of stops and searches per year, ASBOs banning acts which aren't criminal, people being jailed for "blackmail" just for running campaigns, 200 Muslims in jail for having the wrong political views, student protesters getting 3-year sentences while police who murdered Ian Tomlinson walk free. If it acts like a police state then it's a police state, and if you don't fight it then you're an enemy of freedom.
As to your worship of the "law". In Nazi Germany, it was the law to turn Jews over to the state - it was still absolutely wrong to do so. People have every right to cause damage to fight back against corporations which are committing greater crimes such as building bombs, destroying the planet and evading millions in tax. If you don't condone this then you're a sheep.
And as for leaving, your ilk have ruined the ENTIRE world, so it's not an option any more. As you say, "laws are the same wherever you go" - obey the companies and the thugs in uniform - so why bother leaving? It's the same fight for freedom everywhere. you are aware that protests occur in other areas of the country right? you might have heard of rather a large one in London recently. There were anti student fee protests in all the places you mention as "not putting up with it" just a few months ago. There's nothing particularly special about Brighton or the approach of Sussex police to these things...

The lack of communication with a willing police force speaks volumes.
The people of Brighton have listened but these constant protests are just now becoming a nuisance. Stopping bus services on a busy day, being rowdy and uncooperative and generally being abusive is not going to achieve anything other then a loss of support.
I for one will not show any support to anyone who threatens violence or spews abuse.
There was no clear message or protest yesterday and some of the verbal attacks on police just made me lose any sympathy for anyone protesting.
Small businesses are being affected by these constant 'protests' and protesters need to realise the damage they are causing.

It wasn't until we got closer to town that we started noticing the heavy police presence - then suddenly a group of about 25 people in masks came racing towards us, hurling abuse at the Police and physically pushing three of us out of their way - including a 5 year old child.
The kids were upset so we decided to avoid the centre, scrap the shopping plans and head to Pavillion Gardens to grab some food and get out of these people's way.
When we got there, there was another group of people - none of whom looked either sober or hygenic - shouting and swearing at everyone that walked past. Hardly getting any sympathy from the public either!
My young cousins were scared stiff so we decided to head home to calm them down.
Not only did these protestors succeed in driving us out of town - and away from the smaller businesses and restaurants in the Laines which we'd intended on visiting - but also ruined the day for my family - who left Brighton this morning with a pretty negative impression of the place.
I admire the Police's efforts in facilitating people's right to peaceful protest etc, but when these 'people' stop playing by the rules, and end up intimidating the public and hindering local business - the response should be to revoke the protest rights and put their batons to use as they would anywhere else in mainland europe.
Oh, and thanks for ruining my family's weekend. W***ers

I don't actually think its the middle class on the site, making the comments you refer to. It's working class people like me who work hard every day, contributing positively to society that are fed up with a small minority of tossers ruining everything. I suspect that in the main these protesters are a bunch of upper class toff's who have been given the opportunity to study some of the historical contentions between wealth and oppression and due to lack of intellect cant resolve the fact that nothing is black and white, just grey. As a consequence this has probably caused mental instability, which no doubt fueled by drugs and alcohol (paid for by the tax payer directly or indirectly, or both) and has caused this unacceptable behavior. Then can we see who the Police, when they make an arrest, are attacked by other protestors trying to get their 'friends' away from them.
Oh and on the linking arms bits, lets see behind the protestors banners to see how reinforced they are to smash through the Police and general public who get in their way.

Only shouting I saw was at the police and the very occasional abusive passer-by who only got back as good as they gave. Maybe you were one of them - I don't know. Most passers-by were either indifferent or supportive to varying degrees.

Other mailing lists have been shown to have been contributed by people (sometimes police) posing as activists making extreme statements.
Just to vindicate you probably worth me contacting the Argus and if they agree it looks a bit strange they can quickly check the IP Addresses then we can see if you and "Living in the real world" really are one and the same. I think that the protesters sometimes need to think what would they think if this was THEIR home town? I'm sure some are from B&H but lots aren't. How would they like it if it was their city constantly being brought to a standstill? I live here so I have to see the mayhem caused and the damage and rubbish left behind. I simply don't understand why they can't pick any other big places to protest, Eastbourne or Hastings for example??? I really don't wish this on those places but why is it ALWAYS Brighton? As one of the previous comments said he had family over and they witnessed disgusting behaviour from some of these protesters. It really doesn't make me proud to be a resident here sometimes when idiots like this constantly protest here.

Surely SmashEDO is not actually anti-weapons (it would naive to the point of stupidity to believe we should abolish weapon production) so presumably it is more pro Palestine, anti-Israel then? Wouldn't it make sense then to focus on that? Protest outside the Israeli embassy. Form pressure groups on MPs who actually make decisions about military action (hint these decisions don't rest with the Brighton branches of Sainsbury's).
Also as pointed out above, why not other Middle Eastern concerns?
I picked up some ecological concerns (but again what specifics are being requested).
Then there are the protests against cuts. Okay fine, but what alternatives would you like? Simply NO cuts? How would that work? There have to be cuts somewhere.
I will support an alternative to public sector cuts if it is a viable one - but what is being proposed?
Ultimately an unfocused protest by a minority (and at the moment it is a minority) is going to achieve nothing. Even less if they add violence.
The attempt to cast themselves in the light of heroic fighters for freedom just doesn't work without some form of viable alternatives being suggested.
The net result of this march is surely absolutely zero towards any of the concenrs being raised, and probably overall a alienating the average people on the street.

Violence was initiated by the police who are trained in such ways. I've seen it time after time. People repeatedly make claims about protests being unpopular (see earlier post by JHunty and its rebuttal) or being violent but I have yet to see any evidence.
As for the goals and aims - although I am broadly sympathetic to some of the groups I was merely a by-stander so do not feel qualified to comment on their behalf. Frankly I don't know what their aims were on that day and I'm sure the aims of individual groups varied so I can't possibly speak for them.
However I can say as an individual and on my own behalf that it as important to exercise our right to protest and from what I saw and later been told and seen on video there would have been a lot less disruption if the police had not been so heavy handed and stopped the march in its tracks thus increasing the tension and anger of both protesters and passers-by. The horses and police forming a line in Churchill Square was pure farce.

It is the thinkking of ALOT of protesters that NVDA does not work!! It never worked before and it wont now. People who think it works live in cloud cukoo land!

My personal summary of what I have heard and gleaned is that there are a small number of faceless, mindless morons, who cant specify what their issues and hopes are and accordingly don't understand why people aren't listening to them and have become disengaged.
Their solution is both naive and ridiculous as without that clarity of purpose and reasoned argument they are failing to influence and gain support from others and indeed have further marginalised themselves by their posh kid playground actions.
The good news for all is as they grow older they will inherit huge wealth (they are all posh kids) and will mysteriously forget about their previous causes and no doubt the few working class chums they had made and all has gone before.
The bad news is that in many cases their children will have no discipline and will lack common decency and will fill the gap their parents leave behind.............
Oh joy, cant wait to watch the cycle repeat itself.
I am still as keen as mustard to have facial photo's of the disengaged so we can maybe show our appreciation of them if we have the fortune of bumping into them in the street.
Could we please? No of course not, faceless, mindless morons wouldn't want that!
