Three men spent the night in an inflatable toy dinghy after it drifted two miles out to sea.
The trio, who spent 11 hours in the water, were only wearing shorts and T-shirts and had no life jackets or phones with them.
They were rescued early yesterday morning and taken to hospital suffering from exposure and potential hypothermia.
The men, aged between 18 and 22, were spotted off the Worthing coast, waving for help just after 8am.
They were rescued by the RNLI lifeboat crew from Littlehampton.
All they had on board the dinghy was a bag of empty beer cans and a paddle.
Coastguard said the men were ‘lucky to be alive’ and were fortunate that temperatures did not dip lower than 11C and the wind stayed relatively mild overnight.
