A Brighton road has been nominated as one of the best for shopping in the country.

Gardner Street is one of 20 roads across the UK that has been shortlisted in the Google Street View Awards.

Only streets that offer a “broad range of shopping options” including independent boutiques to high street outlets are nominated in the category.

The winner will be chosen in a nationwide poll supported by VisitBritain, Lonely Planet, the fashion editor of Vogue and national magazines.

Gardner Street, which is in the heart of the North Laine, is up against roads known for shopping in Belfast, Cambridge, Leicester, Nottingham and Liverpool.

The nominations have been compiled by a panel of experts from the world of travel, lifestyle and popular culture, including TV presenter Dawn Porter and X Factor Stylist Grace Woodward.

Jane Hamilton, consumer editor of The Sun, who has helped compile the nominations, said: “The sheer range and variety of shops on show on the shortlist prove we're not just a nation of shopkeepers - but a nation of serious shoppers too.”

However Brighton and Hove did not make the shortlist in either of the other awards categories – Britain’s Most Romantic Street and Hippest Street.

Voting opened yesterday (Fri) and closes on May 22. The winning streets in the three categories will be awarded the Google Street View Award trophy.

'broad range' actually means no high street outlets. For instance,St James`s Street had a broad range and then Starbucks and Tesco made it a "narrow range".
