Firefighters tackle blaze in derelict pub

The Ball Tree pub The Ball Tree pub

A fire which started at a derelict pub is being investigated.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service sent crews to the Ball Tree, in Western Road, Sompting, near Worthing, at about 10.30pm yesterday.

The ground floor of the two-storey building was severely damaged by the blaze and the rest of the building suffered heat and smoke damage.

Crews used four pumps to douse the flames and left the scene just after midnight.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said no one was injured.

The Ball Tree derelict! Noooooooooooo! Many's the happy night I spent in there when I was a teenager in the 1970s, I live in Brighton now so I haven't been over there recently. Any Sompting locals know what it's future will be? Will it re-open or is that the end?

That would explain the police 'chopper and the sirens last night then.

I was surprised when I read the planning notice, I hadn't even realised it was shut because it still had the blackboard outside. It must be quite a large area judging by what they're hoping to build there instead.

I missed that and it's only down the road from me!
When I moved here 12 years ago the Ball Tree was a busy pub. Not really to my taste - too many blokes leaning on the bar - but it was a good community pub. Always holding events. I believe that the then guvnor moved to the Marquis of Granby. The Ball Tree went into a decline and never recovered. New people tried but to no good. Sad really.

Thanks for the info. And I used to drink in the public bar along with people like Mick Hoey, John Stoner, 'Uncle' Bill, Rod, (aka 'Harold'), Mick Maplesden, Barry, etc. Most of them were a lot older than me! Any of those names ring any bells?
