A mechanic who repaired vehicles in a car park has been banned from carrying out any more work there for the rest of his life.

Tony Jackson was handed an antisocial behaviour order that stops him carrying out vehicle repairs in or around Shoreham Close in Ashburton.

The ban came after complaints from residents that his business was taking up every available parking space in the car park.

People were also fed-up with loud banging and of engine oil being poured down the drains.

Neighbours said that during weekends the car park would look like a scrap yard, with vehicle parts all over it.

The case was referred to Croydon Council's housing antisocial behaviour team, which works to resolve complaints and to make life better for residents affected by unreasonable people.

The team gathered evidence and also wrote to Jackson and contacted Anglian Homes, whose vans were spotted and photographed being repaired by Jackson.

A warning letter was also sent to Jackson, who later confirmed he was fixing vehicles on the estate and promised to stop.

He denied he was the only one fixing cars on the estate but did say he was the owner of a number of untaxed vehicles.

Complaints continued and the council's ASB team went back and caught Jackson still carrying out repairs to vehicles in the car park.

Another letter was sent but he ignored it again and carried on working on the vehicles, taking up the parking spaces meant for other residents.

The case was then referred to the council's legal department who submitted an application for an antisocial behaviour order, which was granted by Croydon Magistrates' Court on May 13.
