A decision to allow a former trouble hotspot to reopen has sparked controversy.
Sussex Police has appealed against Worthing Borough Council’s decision to grant a licence to the Angelik club on Worthing Pier.
When it was known as The Pier the club was dogged by violence and under-age drinking, but new owner Steve Stevens claims he can shake off the club’s troubled past.
According to Sussex Police the objections to the club’s licence application were overwhelming and the council’s move goes against the interests of residents.
Adur and Worthing district commander Chief Inspector Ian Pollard said: “We believe the granting of this licence was against the weight of evidence and also the restrictions within the council’s own cumulative impact policy which was put in place to protect the interests of local residents.
“The policy restricts the number of licensed venues in Worthing town centre in order to prevent an increase in crime and disorder which will have a negative impact on the community.
“We are committed to keeping people safe and believe the reopening of this venue, with a late closing time, is not in the public interest.
