Hove beach hut causes seafront storm

Hove beach hut causes seafront storm Hove beach hut causes seafront storm

When Jeff Allen went to a wedding he asked a friend to give his beach hut a lick of paint.

But when he returned two days later he discovered his hut had been transformed into a psychedelic piece of art.

Mr Allen has now been given just two weeks to repaint it in strict Brighton and Hove City Council-approved colours.

The brightly decorated hut has caused a minor storm at Hove seafront since it was finished on Monday.

Scores of walkers have stopped for a picture with the unusual building that stands out from the rows of regulation green huts.

Today Mr Allen, from Southwick, who has owned the hut for seven years, said: “I wanted the beach hut to be painted and told the decorator he could paint the door in any colour.

“But obviously he got it wrong and painted it in every colour.

“The council have said I have to change it within two weeks.

“I think I have broken the 11th commandment – thou shalt not paint a beach hut in different colours than those specified. No one in a million years could get away with that.”

The council said new owners are given “clear terms and conditions” on beach hut to preserve the colour of the outside.

A council spokeswoman said: “We specify a particular shade of pale green for the roof and sides of the building, while the bottom sections are painted in a burgundy colour. Owners are given specific BS trade numbers for these two shades.

“The shade of green blends with the seascape beyond and preserves the view from the adjoining conservation areas.

“However, owners are encouraged to customise their huts by choosing any single colour they like for the front doors, and colours already chosen vary from sky blue to deep crimson.”

I like it! Heaven forbid people be allowed to decorate their own property and brighten the place up a bit. Personally, I think the green and burgundy is a tad boring. I'm loving the landscape painted inside. Hopefully they can't make him get rid of that too. Oh well, bye bye bubbles. It was fun while it lasted.

As the doors can't be seen from the adjoining conservation areas, and owners already have some latitude regarding the colours of the doors, why can't Mr Allen keep his - its no worse than some of the single-coloured ones!

Never ever forget - Authority of whichever colour love pointless 'rules', because it's so much more difficult to control individuals!...Tell them to stuff it, and see whether the Greens live up to their promise to encourage peaceful protest!

It's hideous. i passed it yesterday and made a note to complain to the Council.

Crikey, if every hut owner painted their beach huts in any colour they chose- especially psychadelic (sic) gag inducing colours, we would be the laughing stock of the South Coast- or any attractive seaside town.

I know we'll never be as classy as Southwold, but why plunge to the depths of seafront taste as Blackpool.

Of course he should have to conform to the regulation colour scheme. If you dont like the rules, go somewhere else. If you cant stick to rules you should try living somewhere where there is no law. You are in a place called civilisation. Conform or get out.

our beach huts and their colour scheme are iconic and instantly recognisable, whilst some people may like the new look, if every beach hut owner took to different schemes such as graffiti the city would look even more of a mess than it does. in other seaside towns where mix of colours are allowed residents use common sense and paint them nice shades of blue and cream etc. but in brighton and hove you know that the idiots would just do this sort of stupid thing.

Much better looking than the standard beach hut that really looks little better than a garden shed. Let's hope it's the start of some other interesting & appropriate graphic designs. Perhaps the council should take stronger action against clearing grafitti "artists" out of the city before picking on a genuine work of art.

And this is exactly why it cannot be allowed to remain as it is. Don't get me wrong - I think it is funky, individual and well executed piece of art. However, if it is allowed to remain it sets a precendent. That is a problem because the world is mostly full of numpties who think painting a picture of their cat would be equal artistic merit and public appreciation. In fact it would like a vomit inducing granny birthday card bought from Lidl.

That is the most amazing beach hut I have ever seen! Let him keep it! B&H is supposed to be creative, expressive... don't see why they can't have designs on the huts.

Appreciate the argument against though - in this instance it's a well thought out and well painted piece, but no doubt if it were allowed to remain people would DIY and create monstrosities.

I think a compromise is in order - perhaps keep the roof/sides the regulation colours but let people do what they like with the doors, providing it's done by a proper artist and not a moron with a paintbrush daubing "i luv brighton" all over it...

I'd love to see more diverse beach hut fronts, whilst it's not the be all and end all it would brighten that area up no end. And hey, at least he's looking after his beach hut, there are some right cr@ppy ones down there which are far more of an eyesore than this would ever be...

And how on earth is it an eyesore? The public toilet slap bang in the middle of the promenade is far more unsightly.

Brighton and Hove council really needs to lighten up, their taking their petty rules and regulations far too seriously.

This is so obviously a ludicrous attempt by hoveangel and Skino Legs to flog an old beach hut on eBay, it's not even funny. I saw the owner painting this hut himself on Monday, not painting over it, I watched him for quite some time. Don't be fooled by these chancers, that beach hut is worth as little as it appears. The paint job is frankly horrible (I've seen it up close) and the seller is clearly a liar. I await the riposte to this with great anticipation, but there will be no debate.
