Campaigners vow to fight West Sussex waste site plans

Campaigners have vowed to fight plans to convert more than 55 hectares of land in Sussex countryside into waste sites.

West Sussex County Council has identified ten plots of unused land it could convert into refuse plants to meet growing demand.

It will also ensure the authority can phase out landfill sites meaning it escapes fines of £56 per tonne of waste it sends to tips.

However opponents have raised questions about whether the current infrastructure is in place to meet the increase in traffic in transporting tens of thousands of tonnes of waste to the proposed sites every year.

The largest put forward is a nine-hectare site near East Worthing train station known as Decoy Farm.

Worthing borough councillor Victoria Taylor said: “It was mooted for a waste facility some years ago and was rejected at the time unless the East Worthing access road was also approved.

“Again this time I shall be pushing for the two to be looked at together.”

David Tansley, the clerk of Yapton Parish Council, said he was “concerned” about two of the preferred sites being within “striking distance” of the village, near Littlehampton.

He added the parish council was likely to repeat the objections it put forward when the sites were first proposed in 2008.

It added: “We have taken more than our fair share of waste, recycling and sewage plants in the Yapton, Ford and Climping areas.”

The local authority said the new waste sites needed to be based near urban areas, especially the built up coastal area of the county.

It added no development should be in the South Downs National Park but should be in easy reach of existing designated routes for lorries.

Some of the sites are disused brownfield and industrial sites. However, three of those up for discussion are undeveloped greenfield sites.

About 30 were ruled out by the local authority.

Those selected will be uses for wastewater treatment, mass composting and recycling sites for construction materials.

A spokesman for the county council said consultation was ongoing.

He added no decision had been made yet but the deadline was October 2011, when the waste plan has to be submitted for independent examination.

The ten sites are:

  1. Unused former Tarmac manufacturing centre, adjacent to sewage works, Ford, near Littlehampton (six hectares)
  2. Industrial land, Hobbs Barn, near Climping. Three hectare site south of the A259 between Bognor and Littlehampton
  3. The Vinery, a six hectare former mushroom farm to the south of the A27 in Poling, between Arundel and Worthing.
  4. Fuel depot, Bognor Road, Chichester (five hectares)
  5. Nowhurst Business Centre, Strood Green, near Billingshurst (6.5ha)
  6. Brownfield site in Brookhurst Wood, Warnham, near Horsham (4ha)
  7. Brownfield site in Brookhurst Wood, Warnham, near Horsham (3ha)
  8. Greenfield land adjacent to the A23 in Hickstead, near Burgess Hill (9ha)
  9. Greenfield land in Cuckfield Road Goddards Green, near Burgess Hill (5ha)

Why does the story mention Decoy Road as one of the biggest and then the list of the 10 identified doesn't mention it?
Or are there 11 sites?

This is all part of the infrastructure to accommodate the new houses going up over the coming years..Arun district will have to provide 11,300 new houses by 2026 (565 a year);

Chichester district - 9,600 new houses (480 a year);

Horsham district - 13,000 new houses (650 a year);

and Mid Sussex district - 17,100 new houses (855 a year).

They need to dump all their rubbish somewhere...and get Water and somewhere to park their cars and all of the related stuff.

If you are going to have a tip, Littlehampton and surrounding environs are as good a place as i can think of.

according to to a report in the argus last week, places such as Hastings, Bevendean and Moulsecombe alreadyhave a high instance of fly-tipping and other ancilliary rubbish. Surely they wouldn't notice just a bit more.
