Bollards lift minibus into the air in Worthing

A minibus and a car were lifted into the air by newlyinstalled moving bollards.

The new technology introduced by Worthing Borough Council near Worthing Pier has had an up-and-down start.

Shortly after the bollards were installed a woman driving a minibus waited too long at green and as she set off again she drove through the light as it turned red and she and her passengers were lifted into the air.

A similar incident with a car driver was also reported by nearby traders.

A council spokeswoman said: “The new barrier system was introduced a month or so ago with a couple of incidents reported.

“These have related to people attempting to go through the barriers whilst the traffic light style entry system is showing ‘red’.

“If anyone wants vehicular access to the promenade, then all they need to do is draw up to the barrier - staying in the hatched area, press the buzzer, make their request and then when given the OK wait for the light to turn ‘green’ indicating it is safe to move forward.”

It is quite simple. Do not run the Red Light and you are going to be safe! It was the reason the technology was installed. I hope that disciplinary action is taken against the Woman driver who endangered her passengers. Perhaps a net could be added to catch the Cyclists...

Sounds like some timings need adjusting or there needs to be a sensor to stop that happening. I suspect most people wouldn't think the bollards would raise with them still on the crossing.

I don't think it's particularly safe for the bollards to raise whilst there is a vehicle above them - I'm not a H&S nanny sort but lifting vehicles into the air on bollards like that may end in tears!

New technology? Tho I have heard the residents of Worthing are still getting over the arrival of colour television.

Why are people stopping on the yellow hatched area around the bollards? Don't people read the highway code any more?

Highway Code & sanctimony! Suggest the author of that remark seeks help.
Sussex road deaths are on the increase in 2011 and clearly many drivers have little regard for the Highway Code or other road users.
If the minibus driver HAD read the Highway Code maybe he/she would not have endangered passenger(s) or, for that matter, other road users!!

What happens if you stand of them? Or have stopped with a pram positioned on them?
