Seagulls beheaded in Saltdean in "gruesome ritual"

Seagulls have been beheaded and laid out on a beach in what may have been a gruesome ritual.

Mutilated gulls were found at Saltdean beach this week.

Residents have reported birds being stoned to death and shot and wildlife charities said they have seen an unprecedented number of seagull killings in Sussex this year.

Saltdean residents said they knew of at least 15 cases of birds killed in the last fortnight and suspect the number may be higher with dead seagulls seen floating out to sea.

Christine Carruthers, of Westfield Avenue South, Saltdean said: “There are at least three that have had their heads cut off and had been laid out like a ritual.

“It’s absolutely appalling.

“There are now a lot of young ones on their own that cannot fly because their parents have been killed.

“At first we thought it was just a one-off but it’s obviously not.

“We think whoever is doing it must be going out late at night or very early in the morning.”

Another Saltdean resident who did not wish to be named said: “One of the birds died outside my door and her two babies are down on the beach.

“People don’t realise they have been shot until you ruffle their feathers and find a bullet wound.

“I’ve never heard of anything like this before.”

Alex Szabo, founder of the South Coast Animal Ambulance said that they had dealt with 30 bird attacks in the last fortnight - the most they had ever seen.

He said that gulls had been shot by BB guns and been cut with knives in various incidents between Saltdean and Brighton Marina.

He added: “We are taking this very seriously and we want to warn people that this behaviour is not acceptable.”

Roger Musselle from Roger’s Wildlife Rescue said he had been called about more dead gulls so far this year than any other year.

He added: “The beheading might be due to a fox, they do like heads but are not that partial to gulls.

“It’s a pity that somebody hasn’t been prosecuted already but we haven’t been able to catch anybody in the act or witnesses don’t want to go through reporting them.

“Even though they are on the red list of endangered species worldwide, most residents seem to think they are vermin but I consider people who treat wildlife like that as vermin.”

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said: “We’re aware of reports of dead gulls being found on the beach in Saltdean and our beach cleaner has found several.

“However we cannot confirm how these birds have died - whether it’s due to human activity or in the case of younger birds, predation.”

l IT is a criminal offence to kill or deliberately injure a seagull. Anyone caught killing a gull could be fined up to £20,000 or sentenced to six months in prison.

All 11 species of seagull found in Britain, including the most commonly seen herring gulls, are protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

This is a tale of two species. One that produces an enormous surfeit of food that goes to waste, but whose own members starve in their millions. The second species seizes an opportunity for adaptive survival on its own doorstep, by feeding on the senseless waste of the first species, and thrives. Now the question is this: which of these two species is more deserving of respect?

Seagulls = huge annoyance.

They are vermin, pests, a nuisance etc.

I have never felt the same way since one of the blighters made of with the remnants of my Cornish pasty.

The birds have every right to live their lives without being killed by heartless scum. They only scavenge because of filthy litterbuggers throwing food in the street.
We should celebrate and protect our wildlife.
I’ve never understood why it's legal for people to have guns anyway.
Most child and serial killers started off by killing/torturing animals.
I hope they catch whoever is responsible and name and shame them although I expect they will get a free safari holiday from our justice system.

I don't particularly like seagulls but to do this is despicable! Whoever can do something so disgusting as this needs to be made to take responsibility!

'Vermin' is a more appropriate word for the 'humans' that are doing the killing and mutilating. I have never understood why people that live in Brighton - especially those that choose to move here - complain about the seagulls. What DO you expect to find by the sea?! You'll find a clue in the word 'seagull', you morons. This habitat was their home before it was ours, and road-expansion, building development, etc, ruined it.

About 15 years ago when I lived in Saltdean,I got death threats when I suggested a cull of seagulls.
I now live on the Spanish coast and the population of gaviotas is monitored and kept under control.
Brighton has too many seagulls.
Simples!

Shocking behavior. Seagulls have suffered enough and need protection. I hope this person is caught and is punished appropriately considering the murder and suffering caused. That would mean much more than a 6 month sentence. Killing animals such as seagulls with a gun like this is equalivalent to murdering humans and should be treated as such.

To those desperately sad and vulgar herring gull despisers out there, what is your problem! Where does all this evil nasty hate come from! Most humane nature respecting human beings live alongside these wonderful birds without a problem. Yes my car has has the odd defecation on it, not a problem for me and most others I simply wipe it off, yes, occasionally I am awoken by a seagull, big deal I live by the sea! I have gained so much pleasure from watching these incredible birds, they are so dedicated as parents and amusing at times. Maybe some human parents could learn an awful lot from Herring Gulls and we would have less spiteful, species selective, unpleasant people amongst us! Those who harbour a grudge of our herring gulls need to realise fast that they CHOSE to live next to the sea, "what exactly did they expect"! As for the sadistic sicko responsible for this carnage, all I can say is its only a matter of time before your caught! You obviously have alot missing in your life and have some seriously worrying issues to inflict such cruelty on a creature significantly smaller than yourself! Equally as concerning is there is a definite link between animal cruelty and psychopathic tendencies to humans, so it is imperative this disgusting person is swiftly brought to justice!

Just like idiots who move near an airport and complain of the noise.....they are a pain, but you can leave or do what we're doing and get the spikes and netting up to stop them nesting as they have done on our roof for the past 15 years....drive us mad, but we'd never think of harming what are really gorgeous protective creatures.

Even though he made contact with my munch i still ate it, hope i dont get bird flu now!! But killing them is abit harsh even if they are a pain in the back side!

The troublesome Seagull population in Bath is increasing by an estimated 13 per cent every year. Bristol by 11% Bournemouth by 8%

Residents have been given the findings of the first-ever census of the pesky birds - whose mess and noise anger locals and visitors alike. Consultation is now taking place to find a resolution to the pests.

Other local Councils are being urged to conduct a similar discreet survey to counter the hysteria surrounding cull proposals.

Pet Wussy says...
2:52pm Tue 26 Jul 11

Absolutely vile.
Unfortunately, occurrences like this are becoming more common.

The gulls are the way they are due to people's wasteful nature; if there wasn't so much litter and food waste in the streets etc then they wouldn't have become so big and gregarious.

People only have themselves to blame.

And FFS, there is no such thing as a "seagull" - they are either herring gulls (now seemingly referred to as seagulls) or common gulls (not being all that common).

Juleyanne says...
11:17pm Tue 26 Jul 11

The only thing on the south coast we have too much of which is dirty, aggressive and disease ridden is hubby types - now thats something we would all love to live without indeed it would be extremely sensible if he
took his gull hating views along with his
nasty thought processes which have clearly diseased his mind and carry his miserable self absorbed frame off to some other place good riddence!

itllbechaosatfalmer says...
10:23pm Thu 28 Jul 11

So Juleyanne what would you do if another bird species ie Perrigrine falcon starts to feast on your beloved gull chicks?

Yep, I hate them, 5am screeching, mess everywhere, aggresive divebombing! I just prefer a beautiful bird of prey, go falcons go!!!!!!

Juleyanne says...
8:22am Sun 31 Jul 11

Then, itwillbechaosfalmer move, simple answer away from the coast! You bleet about your species selective love of birds of prey (nice to know you at least respect some birds!) but I suspect if Peregrine Falcons increased in numbers you would winge about that too and want them off the planet!
Many things can be aggressive and leave a mess nothing more so than the human race!

itllbechaosatfalmer says...
10:31pm Mon 1 Aug 11

Its ironic you live in Telscombe Cliffs, one of the main reasons that herring gull numbers are claimed to be in decline is the loss of their cliff nesting sites. The undercliff walk that protects your home from falling into the sea denies your beloved gulls a nesting site, thats unless they nest on your roof of course! Enjoy your 5am alarm call!
