Paraglider seriously injured after crashing into Newhaven cliffs

A paraglider crashed into a cliff face, leaving the pilot with “agonising” injuries.

The man slammed into the cliff in front of hundreds of people on Newhaven beach on Saturday evening.

The man, in his 50s, crash-landed into the cliff after his paraglider lost the wind at about 8.30pm.

He suffered serious fractures to both legs and was last night preparing for extensive surgery.

Newhaven coastguard station officer Trevor Cutler was one of the first at the scene. He said: “He was flying with a buddy when he came in to make a landing.

“He either lost the wind or misjudged his landing and went straight down.

“There was a hard impact to both legs and he lay there in agony.

“The beach was cordoned off while he was treated. There were a lot of people about.

“He was in a lot of pain. He was taken on a stretcher into the police helicopter.”

If you think we should only use what "god" (whatever that is) gave us, then best you sell all your possessions and go live in a cave somewhere.. idiot..

What an insensitive and thoughtless idiot you are. (The same goes for 'Hove Actually')

Lets hope the pilot makes a full and speedy recovery.

Pilot --what a laugh--I hope they get a wacking great invoice for wasting NHS resources --hang-gliders are as welcome as an invasion of wasps.

Yet another moron.

Would you say the same if this was a motorcyclist? or a Horse rider? A cyclist? A climber?

Are agonising injuries more painful than serious ones or do they just sell more papers?

The fact is that this chap has damaged himself doing what he enjoys - and where I come from that is known as an accident. So lets hope that after the necessary care and attention he is OK.

It also apears that whilst some are prepared to question the existance or nature of "god" Icarus is accepted as being totally plausible! Bit of a Bart moment there I think.

My brother nearly lost a leg several years ago in Australia where he lives from a hangliding accident, his leg was shattered and required multiple pins, he still has problems to this day but gets on with life with one leg shorter now than the other. In Australia he had private medical cover thank god as most over there do. If you go abroad and participate in 'dangerous sports'
you either pay a hefty additional hike for insurance or find some insurance companies refuse to cover you at all!
I send out my best wishes to this poor man, no-one would wish to come a cropper! however, it might be sensible to take out some sort of insurance for 'high risk' sports/activities especially in these times when the NHS is under such strain.

Road accidents are charged by the NHS for the ambulance and treatment (whether cyclists or motor vehicles) It's charged to their insurance. I expect this man will be covered by some sort of insurance which will pay out.
