Police fear a dog which mauled a child could still be loose in the area.
The Staffordshire bull terrier left a two-year-old boy needing six stitches in his eyelid after biting him in the face.
Though the attack happened last month, police have only now released details of the attack after failing to find the animal.
Officers believe the dog, described as dirty and white with brown patches and no collar, may be a stray.
The child was attacked while walking with his mother in Nepcote Green, Findon, near Worthing, at about 8.30am on Sunday, July 17.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Local inquiries have not found the dog or anyone who owns it and we have asked local people to let us know if they see it or if they think they may know who owns it.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999, quoting serial 795 of July 17.
