Brighton and Hove Greens put cycle lane plans back on track

Revived £450,000 cycle lane plans have been given the green light.

Brighton and Hove City Council approved proposals for a dedicated route in Old Shoreham Road, Hove, at a special meeting yesterday.

It comes months after the previous Conservative administration shelved plans for a major cycle lane in the road for safety concerns.

This was after nearly £100,000 was spent developing the lanes.

The revived 1.5km route from The Drive in Hove to Seven Dials, Brighton, will be paid for by a £330,000 grant from sustainable transport charity Sustrans and £125,000 of council funds and should be complete by March.

We already have miles of these, they are called pavements ...... Ah well, if the delayed traffic due to the road works causes pollution expect us to clogup the streets in protest again...causing more pollution..

Excellent news! That mean's my mate will be able to safely cycle with his kids to Hove seafront.

Would be in favour of cycle lanes if they were actually used by the cyclists , maybe there should be laws dealing with this ; if a cycle lane is provided at vast and ridiculous expense , then cyclists should be fined if they prefer to endanger other lives by cycling on roads instead .

Most of us who use bikes probably use them to get to work - I do.
And the lanes which are there don't really cut the mustard as they are disjointed and ill thought out - they are more designed for a biker who fancies an aimless wander around town than actually people who use bikes to commute.
If I used the lanes to get to work then I'm sorry to say I'd be very late for work! (and no, I dont use the pavments!)

Maybe as they have these lanes at great expense, they should pay lane tax as car owners pay road tax

I'm a commuting cyclist and use the Old Shoreham Road every workday. This will not work leave it as it is. The money would be a lot better spent on sorting out the potholes.

There's no such thing as road tax. Car owners pay vehicle tax. Roads are paid for out of general taxation, because everyone benefits from them even if they don't own a car: through public transport, deliveries to the shops you use, for ambulances and fire engines to drive on, etc.

I costs a lot of money to paint a stripe down the side of the road.

Yet another violent cyclist. What is it with the radical car hating minority or cyclists?

Surely this is a threat of violence to an individual and therefore should be reported to the police?

Sensible move putting a cycle lane in Old Shoreham Road.

Please can the Council do something about the Dyke Rd/Dyke Rd Ave cycle lanes. Cars are always parked over these and then cyclists have to keep coming out into the main road. If you site a cycle lane, it's useless if cars are allowed to park over them

In the Netherlands you cannot use the road if there is a cycle path. The motorists hoot if you do. Thereagain the cycle lanes have curbs, are smooth and cars cannot park on them. Not just a painted line.

So what happened to the safety issues that stopped it going ahead in the first place?

They've shortened the route - it went past Hove park and towards Portslade when first proposed.

We've now got something costing £393/metre that really doesn't help cycle traffic travelling along Old Shoreham road much at all.

I am afraid you are wrong there Graham, there is too much road rage between car drivers without others trying to muddy the waters. I don't agree with violence and was just pointing this out.

When walking around the town and cyclist ride towards me on the pavement or just mount the kerb and cut across me and I just mention that they should take care all I get is a mouthful of abuse back, thats nothing different that car drivers give.

Its just seems in recent months / years cyclists seem to be getting more radical and physical with people, at the end of a day an accident can happen either caused by a cyclist or another road user, but sometimes cyclist never think about what they were doing at the time and instantly blame others.

erm, I think your initial comment is most definitely muddying the waters and is clearly a lame attempt to incite - you've gone onto admit it!!

But lets adderss the point you've made about radical cyclists.

the prime users of roads are cars. cars make the rules. cars make the environment; people don't let their kids ride anymore and its deemed to dandgerous. Drivers go to fast for other road users.
In short, the road environment has been created pretty much 100% for cars, with everyone elses needs
marginalised.

so what you get are pretty much cyclists who don't adhere to the rules - in short, car drivers get the environment they seek.

If there were more acceptance of cycling to take traffic of the road, there would be more 'non radical cyclists' on the roads as the standard of behaviour would go up all round. but the fact is that too many drivers do not want anyone else in what they deem to be 'their' roadspace - they want to get from A to B within the minimum of fuss or care.

You want better cyclists? then create an environment where your average person with 2 kids feels safer with them on the road.

Graham you have me wrong, I am not a car owner or driver, just commenting on the amout of agression on the road at the present time. Road rage for car drivers has been talked about for years but the new influx of agression from cyclists is new.

We live in a democracy and if people want to drive cars now matter how much I disagree they have a right to do so, as do cyclists to use the roads but until such a time that a bill is passed by the government to ban cars then we are stuck with them.

You have stated "In short, the road environment has been created pretty much 100% for cars", we you are incorrect basically initially it was for horse and coach and horses and the car is the natural progression from that mass transportation method of the time.

You also say "You want better cyclists? then create an environment where your average person with 2 kids feels safer with them on the road", can I suggest if you feel like that then you move out of a city centre to the suburbs.

And rightly so. I noticed this evening that a considerable amount of newly felled tree branches was adorning the park and perhaps the Council could arrange for them to be cleared to allow for scrap metal and other waste to be deposited.

the traffic lights have i agree been re-phased which i suspect is a cynical ploy by the authorities to replicate the policy used in Greater London to enhance the perception that congestion is increasing and allow for the introduction of road use/congestion charges and then once implemented, hey presto the lights will revert back to previous phasing and the congestion will be eased over night and the council can say, look charging works!
