A man who broke into a woman's flat and sexually assaulted her has been jailed.

Napindi Palu, 30, of Thurtle Road, Bethnal Green, appeared at Lewes Crown Court today after pleading guilty to two charges of sexual assault and a charge of attempted burglary at a previous hearing on June 17.

The court was told Palu travelled from London to Brighton on the evening of May 3 and at 6am the next day broke into a ground-floor in Varndean Road, Brighton.

The occupant, a woman aged 65, woke to find Palu rifling through her handbag in her bedroom. He then sexually assaulted her before she managed to escape and ran out of the flat to raise the alarm.

Palu was given an indeterminate sentence for public protection of four years and one day. This means he must serve this term before he is assessed for release. He must be assessed as posing no risk to the public before he can be released.
