Sussex MPs vote in abortion challenge

A Sussex MP voted in favour of a bid to strip abortion providers of their role advising pregnant women.

But the amendment, put forward by Conservative MP Nadine Dorries in the Commons yesterday, was comfortably defeated by 368 votes to 118.

East Worthing Shoreham Conservative Tim Loughton put his name to proposed changes that would have prevented charities such as Marie Stopes International from giving counselling to womenseeking abortions.

Voting against was Green MP for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas, Lib Dem MP for Eastbourne Stephen Lloyd, and Conservatives Mike Weatherley (Hove), Simon Kirby (Brighton Kemptown), Nicholas Soames (Mid Sussex), Gregory Barker (Bexhill and Battle) and Amber Rudd (Hastings and Rye).

Under the proposals, counselling would have been offered by “independent” providers rather than those connected with providing abortions.

These "independent" counsellors aren't independent at all, they have an agenda to try & stop abortions happening.
I wouldn't take advice on transfusions & transplants from a Jehovahs Witness & I wouldn't give advice on steak tartare cos I'm veggie.
If I want advice, I want it from a professional who knows the scientific facts & the laws, not some interfering god-botherer who's trying to impose their beliefs on my life.
ok, bring on the trolls...

The proposals were a farce and should never have even been raised in the house. I didn't vote for Kirkby but wrote to him about this issue and I'm glad to see he went with popular opinion/common sense.

Pity Kirby et al from the ConLibs don't listen to the critics of the rest of the NHS reforms; ones that will affect us all as users of the NHS. Lets hope that the passage through the Lords will ensure the safeguards to the NHS are enshrined in Law.

I hope the NHS reforms are thrown out. The NHS was fine until this unelected "government" came in. They're just content doing they've turned the UK into: a ConDemNation,

Sad that those contributing above have missed the point completely - Marie Stopes counsellors may not be neutral when advising those considering an abortion as they are paid by the organisation in what is a £60m business.
The debate suggested that unbiased counsellors should be made available to those contemplating an abortion.
The proposal failed.
Draw your own conclusions.

Is there any link between the perceived problems of obtaining impartial or indepenant unbiased abortion information and the report about the dramatic increase in unwanted children in the Brighton and Hove area on this site today?
