Council lists ideas for Olympic legacy YACHTS visiting Wey-mouth could be asked for a voluntary contribution to create a lasting sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic Games.

The proposal is one of a range of options contained in a legacy list' being considered by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

In a draft document the council has identified 12 key areas which it says must be addressed if Dorset is to benefit from a lasting economic, social and sporting legacy.

The list includes proposals to enhance the profile of the Jurassic Coast, promote Weymouth as a centre for marine and leisure excellence, improve visitor accommodation, and faster trains.

It also wants to see more local children involved in sport, more affordable homes built and more businesses attracted to the area.

Coun Ian Bruce said: "It's important the borough council plays a role in the build-up to the Olympics in order to create a legacy.

"We need to be welcoming to all the businesses and to all the volunteers and to liaise with other people to make the games a success."

Healthy Although the list is still in the consultation stage, councillors have already agreed on the broad priorities.

One objective looks at ways of attracting more people of all ages to participate in sports as part of a healthy lifestyle.

The report asks for a voluntary contribution from all visiting yachts and vessels to Weymouth harbour, with the contribution being added to a fund to support participation in sailing and other sports by those who are unable to afford access and equipment'.

A further key priority is to cash-in on the economic potential of the surrounding area particularly the Jurassic World Heritage Coast.

Linking of this globally recognised designation with the hosting of the Olympic events has clear potential marketing and economic benefits,' the list states.

But Coun Bruce said the list needed to include achievable aims and not just aspirations.

"If we are talking about attracting business I support the measures but the list needs to be directed in the right areas.

"Anything to do with schools is really the responsibility of Dorset County Council so it might be better left to them."

Improvements to hotel accommodation are also proposed with the provision of a four-star hotel planned for the Ferry Terminal site'.

The proposed Orange Route relief road is singled-out as a positive legacy from the Olympics as is the frequency and speed of train routes'.

The legacy list is to be considered at the next meeting of the economy and regeneration committee on September 26 and then forwarded to the Dorset Strategic Partnership before being finalised.
