Petition to rename Brighton landmark to be discussed by council today

Put The Palace Back In Our Pier campaign Put The Palace Back In Our Pier campaign

A petition to put the Palace back into Brighton Pier will be received by the city council today.

A petition set up by the city's Labour and Co-Op group in July has now received almost 250 signatures, while The Argus' own campaign has been backed by almost 1,300 people.

Both urge the council to work with any new owner to ensure the pier's original name is restored.

1,550 signatures from a popoulation of approx 250,000. Not really concentrating the minds of local residents I feel. My mate Kent Pocknall was recalls the re-naming of it back in 2000 to The Brighton Pier, however, he claims that it is apparently still not recognised by the National Piers Society and is still affectionately known by locals as the Palace Pier.

I didn't realise it no longer called the Palace Pier in the first place! But yeah, bring back the EVENING Argus, instead of this current sub-Daily Fail churnalist advertising rag....

Remember, 'i' before 'e', except after 'c'.

The Argus was renamed when it became a morning rather than an evening paper.

That's what my neighbour said. I told him he was weird.

Where's the petition to make Nobles repair the damage they've done to the listed structure? They've 'lost' the theatre and other parts they were supposedly storing safely. Take the repair money they owe from the profit they make selling the pier.
I'd sign that petition!

Erm, can we also start a petition to outlaw the use of the name 'Brighton' to all references to the 'city' when it should always be referred to as 'Brighton & Hove'? (for example - 'visitBrighton.com' that constantly talks about how wonderful the 'city' of 'Brighton' is!!

As far as I'm aware, anyone can start a petition, so go ahead.

Nice to see that the Labour and Coop group have their priorities right. Yes let's rename the pier, and forget about providing alternative ideas and costings for how to cut the deficit, feed the poor, house the homeless, etc.etc.... surely it can only be a matter of time before one of their usual councillors writes to the Ragus to pat themselves on the back for their great leadership at a time of enormous crisis?

Oh strangely the Argus deleted my post pointing out that after the destruction of the West Pier, there's now only ONE pier in Brighton, so it makes good advertising sense to call it the BRIGHTON PIER, rather than confusing tourists.

As the Pier is in the city of Brighton & Hove I think it should be renamed "Brighton & Hove (actually) Pier"

These days, we say 'the pier', since we only have one...
