No inquiry into scheme for Worthing's Teville Gate

A £150 million redevelopment creating 1,000 jobs looks to have cleared the final hurdle.

Councillors granted permission for the Teville Gate scheme in Worthing in September with the promise that it would create a new gateway to the town.

But developers delayed moving the cranes in as they waited to see if the Government wanted to review the decision.

Bosses at Worthing Borough Council have now confirmed that it has received a letter from Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles’ office indicating that there would be no need for a costly public inquiry.

It is believed this would have set it back by at least another year and increased building costs dramatically.

Regeneration cabinet member Bryan Turner said: “There is nothing else to stand in the way of the development.

“I am looking forward to the regeneration of the site, particularly the 1,000 jobs that it will create."

The plans were drawn up by Brighton-based Russell Drage Architects on behalf of site owner Hanson Capital Management.

It will include 229 flats, a nine-screen cinema, a Sainsbury’s food store, plus conference and restaurant facilities.

Proposals for an 80-bedroom hotel and car parking spaces for 967 vehicles were also approved.

mmm. Dont really need the Sainsburys as there is a large Morrisons next door!, other than that, looks good, will bring some much needed life into the drab scenery around the Broadwater area of Worthing

£150m would be better spent on a Worthing by-pass, then people might actually choose to visit the town rather than avoid the snarled up feeder roads.

All very well having over 900 parking spaces, but if parking's too expensive, no-one will want to come here. Much the same as it is now.

The last estimates for the Lancing-Worthing bypass were placed at nearly £1 billion with the tunnels required.

The £150m development isn't being funded by government local or central, so I'm not sure how the money would somehow help a bypass, which would unless it was a toll road, would be funded by government.

It can't happen soon enough, the whole area is an eyesore, and I will be happy to rent some of my flats to the new employees. Great news indeed !!
