A petrol postcode lottery is hitting drivers where it hurts – in the wallet.
Motorists are paying through the nose in some petrol stations when just down the road prices can be as much as four pence per litre cheaper – from the same company.
Last night the big three suppliers said they simply matched prices to competitors.
It means residents unlucky enough not to have a choice of petrol stations nearby have to fork out much more of their hard-earned cash.
Tesco customers, for example, can pay an extra 4p per litre – the equivalent of an extra £2 per tank for the average 50-litre car – if they live just a handful of miles away from one of the giant’s stores..
The Holmbush Tesco at Shoreham was yesterday (November 16) selling unleaded fuel at 131.9p per litre.
But at the Burgess Hill Tesco unleaded was 134.9 per litre – while the main
Tesco store in Durrington, Worthing, was charging 135.9p per litre.
The cheapest fuel in the county was on offer at the Asda in Crowhurst Road, Brighton, at 129.7p per litre of unleaded.
In contrast, those shopping at the Texaco garage on the A27 near Lewes had to pay 138.9p per litre.

Dear Argus, At my local supermarket, a chocolate bar costs much less than the same item at the newsagents down the road. Would you like to write a story about that? Or what about the fact that, get this, in two separate pubs you MIGHT have to pay a different price for a pint or a glass of wine!!!!! Shocking, isn't it?

how can it be "price differences exposed" Cmon Argus, do you think that the good motorists of Sussex drive around with their eyes closed ? We all know that the cost of petrol varies around the county and the country. Its hardly front page news and certainly not worthy of the dramatic headline. Please find some news that we dont know about.....

For once the article clearly highlights that at 3 different TESCO petrol forecourts there is a discrepancy in price.
I don't get why there should be a difference in price at different locations of the same company.
Up in the surrounding towns near Gatwick it's averaged around 137.9p for many months but travelling down brighton it seems to have remained failry constant around 134.9p and where my parents live they have rarely seen it creep above 130p all year!

Basic market economics refers to both supply/demand (the price will be one that the market will support) and. that higher turnover in larger stores means that they can squeeze cost margins and thus have lower prices. This is without taking into account the cost differentials between these sites that would also impact on profitablity and thus cost of goods.
