Residents have backed The Argus' referendum on council tax.

Thousands of people have already had their say on Brighton and Hove City Council's proposed 3.5% hike in council tax next year.

Politicians have already backed our campaign but now residents have also praised it and cast their votes.

Stuart Gover, a council tenants' representative, of Wellington Road, said: “It's a fantastic idea and I think it's a great idea to let the people have their say.

“Everyone is talking about this council tax rise and what it's going to mean to them and The Argus is giving people the chance to say what they think.”

What would you do?

We are asking what you would do if you were in control of the council's purse strings.

Would you take advantage of the £3 million incentive from the Government to freeze rates - equivalent to a 2.5% hike in council tax?

Or are you happy with the Green administration's proposals to raise tax by 3.5%?

The council says this would minimise the impact on public services and would not lead to higher tax rises in future, unlike the Government's preferred option.

The final option is to raise council tax by a greater level than the Greens have suggested.

Public reaction

On The Argus website there have been a range of reactions.

Yes I'm Right said: “The solution's not to increase the size of the tax but to get some of the benefit grabbing malingerers to contribute. People who don't contribute shouldn't be able to influence the vote.”

Jimmy Stewart's Imaginary Rabbit said: “Spread the pain. A small increase and a reduction in services is probably the best compromise.

“It also needs a central government change so that parking revenues etc can be used as general council income and not used solely for transport 'improvements'.

“Brighton's traffic, far from being a problem, is actually a huge, untapped resource.”

The results of our referendum will be published on Thursday - the day the Green administration announces its budget.
