The Hawth’s production of Peter Pan is a no-expense-spared extravaganza of a show. From the brilliantly choreographed opening, bristling with energy, right through to the glitzy walk-down, it’s absolutely dazzling.

Nigel Havers is an exceptional Hook and a pleasure to boo. He leads a huge cast of superb performers with some exceptionally talented singers and dancers. Most notably Kerris Peeling, whose Peter Pan is fresh and believable.

Visually, the audience is spoilt for choice, every scenic moment is packed full of beautifully sculpted sets, rich detailed costumes, and Le Maitres’ fabulous pyro “shooting stars” add to the wow factor.

There are moments though when the show teeters into over-design – the lighting is occasionally fussy and the sound notched up a little high for a family audience. Some of the choreography is a bit racy too, and certainly wouldn’t look out of place in an MTV video.

But these are just details. What matters is how much it engages and entertains the audience, and the answer to that essential question is completely. Whether it was the Darling children’s first flying lesson, the tragic demise of Tinkerbell, or the swashbuckling fighting scenes, the crowd were rapt.

The show’s pace and energy power through the story, and as the audience are implicated in Hook’s final moments, the adults join the children, abandon all pretences and participate in enthusiastic style.

If you are looking for a Christmas show that is action-packed, dynamic and guaranteed to entertain the whole family, then this one is definitely for you.
