Call for public to back new food and drink festival

A new food and drink festival is set to take place in Sussex next year.

The Adur and Worthing Food and Drink Festival is due to run from July 7 to 15.

The event already has the support of the Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce, Worthing Town Centre Initiative and some restaurateurs.

However, Adur District Council and Worthing Borough Council need more food-loving people to get on board.

They are appealing for food producers, growers, chefs, caterers, retailers, restaurateurs and publicans to get in touch for the event, which is to be held at different locations including Worthing Lido.

A statement from the councils said: “Our aim is to get taste buds tingling at the thought of so much lovely food and drink being showcased at this new initiative.

“Food and drink businesses can get involved by having stalls, giving demonstrations or tastings, create a special festival menu, dish, cocktail or offer for the period of the festival.

“An ideal location to start and finish the event is currently being sought for both areas, with Worthing Lido area a favourite to kick-start the festival and piggybacking onto the already successful Shoreham Chilli Festival in Adur to finish it.”

Councillor Jim Funnell, Adur cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We know we’ve got some fantastic producers and growers on our doorstep.”

Councillor Bryan Turner, Worthing cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Although there isn’t a specific budget for this event we thought it would be good to come together under one ‘festival’ banner for a period of time.

“We can help by providing stalls and publicity but, basically, we are appealing to all of you ‘foodies’ to come forward to get involved in making this event something to be proud of in our area.”

Chief executive at Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce Tina Tilley said: “We see this as a great opportunity to promote all the local businesses that provide a diverse food and drink offer across our whole area.”

People who want to support the event should call Janice Fraser on 01273 263022.
