Tourism grant awarded to Worthing

Worthing has been awarded £170,000 to develop tourism tools including a mobile phone version of a popular website.

The borough council was awarded the sum through the European 2 Seas programme for a project to support the visitor economy in the area.

It has formed a partnership with ten other towns in England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands to put together the “Seaconomics” scheme – which will fund a number of initiatives aimed at growing the tourism sector.

Bryan Turner, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This project offers a fantastic and unique opportunity for tourism businesses in Worthing to really put the town on the tourism map across Europe and beyond.

“I would encourage all tourism businesses to maximise the opportunities that this funding presents to them, and help us shape Worthing’s future as a first class visitor destination.”

Part of the funding will be used to pay for a new children’s play area in Beach House Grounds in Worthing adjacent to the sand sports courts.

There is also a small fund available for multilingual signs and promenade/beach chalet improvements in the Splash Point area.

This part of the EU funding will be matched by Worthing Borough Council’s own capital budget.

New initiatives such as a mobile version of the www.visitworthing.com website will be investigated while the local authority will look to launch a new marketing campaign.

The announcement means the council’s regeneration team has managed to draw in well over £1million of external funding over the last couple of years.

Dear Brian Turner - could I suggest that you look up the words "unique" and "fantastic". I think most would agree that they dont really apply to a some cleaned up beach chalets, a new playground and an updated website. And do you really think that those tiny and relativley insignifcant chnages will "put the town on the tourism map across Europe and beyond" and make Worthing a " first class visitor destination" . Come off it , thats ludicrious. Sure, its all nice to have but it is hardly groundbreaking stuff. And the website changes maybe a tad pointless given the target demographic. It is not often I've heard a pensioner say "yeah man, dat worthin' got class but I aint visitin' till theyz sorted dem website, innit ? If me cant scope on a mobe then they can stick it - i'm ridin' the Coastliner to Eastbourne baby"

So you'd prefer they didn't bother getting external funding for things?

What are your bright ideas?

Gregg Wallace ? Of Masterchef fame -wow

well. I'm afraid you misunderstand me. As I said before - it is all very nice to have and in no way a bad idea. My point is the yawning gulf between the polictal spouting off and spin versus the reality of whats actually happening. Consider it like a plate of food - this one looks three michelin star but tastes of cardboard and hollow emptiness

politicians, councillors and, indeed, people should tell it like it is. I prefer my information real not spun or exaggerated beyond recognition

Spanners has a point. Worthing has a great seafront landscape but the place has a run down abandoned feel to it.
It needs investment and quickly as it won't compete with the South West and Eastbourne as a coastal holiday destination.

Eastbourne is investing heavily into changing it's reputation as an old folk's home as it recognised that it was dying.
It's spending cash on marketing itself to outdoor pursuit people in a big way which is seeing a change in the demographic of visitors. Check out the annual Eastbourne Extreme festival, it has a website and is starting to attract vast numbers of young people.
Somehow I can't see triathlons, hangliding and sport being your thing Captain.
