Hundreds expected for Burning the Clocks

Hundreds of school children take part in the Burning the Clocks event every December 21 Hundreds of school children take part in the Burning the Clocks event every December 21

Hordes of people are set to “summon the sun, embrace winter and celebrate the passing year” at this year’s Burning The Clocks.

Established in 1995, the event combines a family solstice lantern parade with a fire and fireworks show.

Organisers say Burning The Clocks is a “unique community event that brings the whole city together to mark the shortest day and ushers in the new sun”.

The parade will leave North Street at 6.30pm tonight and should arrive at Madeira Drive at 7.15pm, finishing at 8pm. This year the parade route will be: North Street, Ship Street, Bartholomews, East Street and Madeira Drive.

For the best viewing position, go straight to Madeira Drive and watch the parade arrive.

Do not wait in New Road to watch the parade as this is the assembly zone for 1,000 participants and there is no extra space.

Disabled audience members will have access to the participants viewing area.

On arrival at Madeira Drive, ask a steward to direct you or follow the parade to the finale site gates.

The spokesman said: “Burning the Clocks needs your support.

"This much loved local event relies on the support of local businesses and individuals to continue.

“This year we are asking everyone who participates and watches the event to donate £1 by texting the word ‘sameskyclocks’ to 70100 thereby securing the event for next year.”

After reading the article three times I can't see where is says only a few hundred are expected. Hundreds, hordes and 1,000 participants yes, but a few? I expect to see hundreds of people there tonight, probably thousands but I won't be counting them individually.
Stop being such a misery.

Which also doesn't say 'a few'.
Miserable.

It's a worthwhile event which is a step in the right direction. I would like to see adoption of more complete mid-winter pagan celebrations culminating, ideally, with Brighton selecting it's own Wicker Man (I'm not offering myself this year).
Perhaps wider participation could be sought from council or transport bosses within such an event?

It is the Owls I feel sorry for, burning to death so horribly for the fun of the 'few' who attend and set of Sky Lanterns.

HAHA! Excellent and so so typical of these sort of events and this nonsense in particular.

I blame Nick Clegg, immigrants, the French and any one trying to have an ounce of fun, or should that be kilogram as we are in Europe?
