Four teenagers have been arrested after a cyclist was attacked on the seafront.
The 48-year-old man, from Brighton, suffered serious injuries to his jaw and ankle during the assault which happened just after 10.30pm yesterday.
The man was cycling east along Madeira Drive, near to the Brighton wheel, when he was attacked by the group and fell off his bike. He is still receiving treatment at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
Police searched the area and arrested four boys on suspicion of causing grevious bodily harm.
Two are aged 15 and two are 14. They are currently in custody for interview and while further inquiries are made.
Detective Sergeant Steve Warner said: “We are still establishing exactly what happened but at this stage it appears to have been an unprovoked attack on a man cycling home by a group who were not known to him. Nothing was stolen from him and robbery does not appear to have been a motive.
“We would like to hear from anyone who was in the Madeira Drive area late on Wednesday evening and who saw a group of young people or the cyclist.”
