Bargain-hunters went sales shopping crazy yesterday – giving a huge boost to under-pressure traders.

Tills were jingling across the county as a pre- Christmas rush turned into a sales dash.

Independent stores counting their December takings said they were continuing to buck the gloomy economic trend, while one shop reported its best sales for 17 years.

But there are warnings 2012 will bring fresh challenges and new help will be required to keep small businesses thriving.

The motorways on Boxing day were clogged with traffic - apparently shoppers off to the sales.
